Don't american advertising laws allow for claims like "offering superior performance" etc? Its a vague claim. Like how all washing detergents claim to be "superior", but really only one of them can, and it depends on how you test it anyway. Its only when they get specific that they can get in trouble.

I think were Intel may be borderline in false advertising is where they make out that the Pentium 4 is somehow needed to surf the internet. A Pentium 1 is enough for that. Actually a Pentium 1 is enough for anything that most people (AOL users) do with their PC.

with all the system resources AOL sucks up you can bet a Pentium 1 isn't enough :p

My meaning is that a lot of people buy a PC to surf the web, do email, and occasionaly use a word processor. Thats all. Why do such people need to buy a Pentium 4?

in reality it all comes down to usability and upgradability. for example, the way MS keeps making new version of Office create documents that are incompatible with older versions, etc. sooner or later even common users will get tired of having to ask people to convert files especially for them or will simply buy new versions of sofware. this software keeps sucking up more and more resources, ie even something as simple as AOL. AOL7 vs say AOL3 will feel much more sluggish on a lowend computer.

so these people have essentially one choice, upgrade or buy a whole new system. most people as you describe would probably be rather uncomfortable upgrading and would just spend a few hundred for a new machine. what do those new computers come with? either P3s or P4s, with P4s being seen more these days. it is very true to say that a P2 would be more than adequate for even someone using the latest software or Operating System, but when upgrading or getting a new system, what is more available on the market? a P3/P4 or a P2?

Hell, as long as you know how to program a TCIP packet driver in DOS mode, you can surf the internet using only an old IBM XT coupled with a 2400 Baud modem and either the Lynx browser or any communications software that emulates VT terminal types.

I did that for many months back in 1994-95ish. :) Let them people with their 14.4s and their 386s chug along loading a wepage loaded with JPEGS and GIFs on Netscape 3.1!!

My old XT with Lynx kicked their arses!! :p

How does AMD misrepresent the speed of their processors? It doesn't take much time with google to find out the speeds of the various XP's. It's not as if AMD is hiding anything. Just because lazy consumers don't want to research before they make their purchase doesn't make AMD liable for anything.

haw:D its about time they got what they deserve. The pentium 4 at the center of your digital world! by that reasoning you could scrap getting a Geforce 4 in favour of a tnt and get the same results

I was always really annoyed by the way Intel commercials made it sound like your internet would run better by upgrading to the Pentium4. I can almost guarantee the lawsuit won't do much, maybe a small settlement but that would be about it, but even so I love seeing Intel get sued. :D

It can never be a bad thing:D I was looking through a catalogue for a local store in the computer section and their glossory was rather amusing

Cpu: blah blah <general description>.....if you spend alot of time on the internet you will need a faster processor.

rofl all this time I thought my 4.5kb/s downloads were due to my 56k! silly me:rolleyes: :D
