what are you all using to play Divx/xvid files?

I tried Divx 6.5 and 6.5.1 both semi work, but cause problems

ffdshow works, but keeps crashing gspot

and so far nothing has been able to get thumbnails for avi files under vista

Newest version of DIVX followed by the newest version of XVID. Under the XVID installation, I choose to not allow it to decode all 4 types.

This works for thumbnails under 32bit for me with 2 machines. Under 64 I can't get anything to enable previews.

ok, i have 64bit version of vista

divx causes huge problems for me, when i open the file, it plays fine, but when i skip from one place in the file to the next, then when the problem starts. video turns into slide show, CPU usage goes up to around 60%

hmm, I normally use ACE mega codec pack for all of that stuff, so I'll try installing it and see what happens.

ok, i figured it out

in 64bit windows you basically need two codecs

media center and explorer is 64bit
while defualt media player is 32bit

so right now i'm using two different versions for ffdshow. I have 64bit ffdshow for media center and explorer to have the thumbnails.

and i have 32bit ffdshow for media player, all seems well now.

Could you please post links to these to packs of ffdshow?

64bit
http://ffdshow.faireal.net/mirror/ffdshow/ffdshow64-rev2546.exe

and 32bit(there is a new one almost every few days)
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/codecs_and_filters/ffdshow.cfm

install both in seperate directories, also keep the startmenu folders seperate.

do you run 64bit windows?

if so, you can also change the defualt media player from 32bit to 64bit, and only install 64bit ffdshow.

There is second method that make the WMP 11 x64 as the default media player for the Windows Vista. You need to perform 2 steps each to swap to 64-bit version or to undo the change back to 32-bit version WMP. First step of unregmp2.exe command change the operating system shortcuts to point to WMP 64bit, while the second registry step changes the file associations default program to WMP64-bit, which determines which program will be used when you double click on a media file.

To switch and change to x64 or 64-bit of WMP11, open an elevated command prompt as administrator and type the following command:

%windir%\system32\unregmp2.exe /SwapTo:64

Then, open Registry Editor (regedit), then navigate to the the registry key of “HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Cur rentVersion\App Paths\wmplayer.exe”. Then set the registry subkey “Path” to be “%Programfiles(x86)%\Windows Media Player” (without quotes), and “(Default)” subkey (normally the first entry) to “%ProgramFiles%\Windows Media Player\wmplayer.exe” (include quotes).

To undo the x64 change, switch, swap, revert and change back the default media player to Windows Media Player 11 x86 32-bit edition, also open an elevated command prompt with administrator privileges, but issue the following command instead:

%windir%\system32\unregmp2.exe /SwapTo:32

Then, run Registry Editor, and reset the value for registry subkey of “Path” and “(Default”).

FFDSHOW is amazing codec, because it can pretty much decode everything

Yes I switched to Vista x64 because Lee sold me his G.Skill CL3 memory.
Thanks for the other fix but I'm fine with installing two different ffdshow versions :D

don't need any comunist software on my computer

installing codec packs is just dumb, why would you want to infest your computer with 20+ different codec? when one codec can basically decode everything thats out there?

NEVER EVER NEVER EVER EVER EVER install codec packs of any form.

They will fork Vista bigtime. lol

The best way is to get the newest daily builds of ffdshow seperately, then in the settings for ffdshow change Xvid from libacodec or whatever its called actually to Xvid.

Struggling to find that blasted link for the absolute latest for Xvid, but the ffdshow one can be found at free-codecs.com or sourceforge.net

Xvid 1.1.2 by Koepi http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Koepi_XviD.htm

ffdshow http://www.free-codecs.com/download/FFDShow.htm

If you get any trouble with AC3 based Xvids, go for this. http://www.free-codecs.com/download/AC3_Filter.htm

If you intend to do any sort of converting, like from a HD source to Xvid you will need the AC3 Decompressor. http://www.free-codecs.com/download/AC-3_ACM_Decompressor.htm

Odd... I used the Kazaalite Codec Pack from years ago and it seems to be working flawlessly for me on Vista....

This is a very nice codec mini-package for x86/x64, containing FFDSHOW, Haali Media Splitter, VobSub and few others (WMP 11 32/64 switching, etc.).

x86: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Codec-Packs-Video-Codecs/Advanced-Vista-Codec-Package.shtml
x64: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Codec-Packs-Video-Codecs/VistaCodecs-x64Components.shtml

(no, FFDSHOW cannot do everything, although it can do a lot)

Latest release of Vista Codec Pack might contain Win32/Starter trojan (backdoor), at least according to Microsoft OneCare Live Scanner for Vista x64:

From http://www.jtow.net/users/triess/

Recently there have been reports by Microsoft One-Care and Forefront of a possible malware infection contained in this package. These are FALSE POSITIVES and I will see what I can do correct this before the next release.
