The power supply manufacturers are thrilled about four cards in a high-end machine as such a system will demand a lot of power, probably even more than 1000W.
Hmmmm....:p It will be interesting to see how R600 pans out and what Nvidia's counter will be.:D

8850Gx2? :o Seriously, 4 cards are two too many!

At over 1KW, it will probably flop. I'm not talking vendor specific, but in general. The amount of power needed is far beyond what is reasonable. An average home has about 1800W max per circuit. (120V x 15amp). I would be that most people wouldn't be able to even run a computer like that without first calling an electrician.
If you figure 10 cents per killowatt hour, which is probably a decent average, that means a computer drawing 1000W would cost $36 a mo if it were running half the time, and $72 a mo if it was 24/7. I think you might notice that on your electric bill. :)
Of course anyone who can afford $2500 in video processing power, probably won't have a problem calling an electrician to get them a dedicated circuit, and be able to pay $70 a month to run their pc.
The other thing too is I can't even imagine how hard it would be to keep that cool. I'm not even just talking about the case, but as it is my room temp can go up significantly with a single card.
Nvidia tried it and we tested the Quad SLI with two 7950 GX2 cards but we got super lame performances out of it.
Why, you make it sound so professional. :p
EDIT: One more thing to think about, it's either going to have to have dual psus, or your going to have 8 PCI-E connectors on a single PSU. :headexplode:
X2950GX2 ? :D
doubt it will be released early though .. maybe 3-6 months after the intro of the R600.

I think you are overestimating power draw...
First of all a high end 8800gtx SLI rig will draw less than 400w under load. Also, each time you add another card it doesn't double the GPU power requirements. As you add more cards to the system each has to do less work when the game/settings are held constant. This means each will draw less power. If one were able to get 4 8800's together it probably would only draw ~550-560w.
I doubt that quad R600s will pull more than 1kw...

As you can see an additional 8800GTX adds less than 100w to the load figure. (86w to be exact)
This figure will change slightly depending upon the game and its settings though...

Yea, I think it is a little high too, but that is what Tiki quoted from the article. The R600 is supposed to draw more than a gtx IIRC, so it would probably put it close to 650W loaded. (Then you can add in extra for your Liquid setup, and maybe another C2D quad:))

Bah!
The R600 will probably cost some cash.... then wait for the Elect. bill and you'll be scared of the card

I wont care about the electric bill if the R600 can run Crysis @1600x1200,4xAA,16xAF at smooth framerates :afro2:
