View Full Version : SuSe 8.0 Problems.
Has anyone actually gotten the nvidia drivers to work with SuSe 8.0? If they have can they please help me? I've tried changing XF86Config and still no luck. I get a black screen when X starts up. Can someone offer a possible solution? Thanks!

I've tried everything trying to get it working with Suse 8.0. I always get the same thing as you - a blank screen when I start X11, or perhaps a couple blue flashes and then a blank screen. I think the problem is with the driver itself - because with equivalent settings, "nv" works and "nvidia" does not.
Please let me know if you get it working.
I used the YAST2 online update and everything worked fine. (I only had to run the switch2nvidia and switch2nvidia_glx scripts) Can you post your XF86config file?

Below I've posted my XF86Config file. As well, the log file of an unsuccessfull run is attached.
I've run nv_checkl.sh, and it reports that everything is fine. Also, as per the log file, it says that nvidia is loaded successfully - it just gives me a blank screen, however.
I have a Vanta TNT2.
Any insight is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Have you tried running ldconfig after you are done installing the rpm's?
It helped me, but then again I did two million things trying to fix this. At least X starts now.
T
SuSE 8.0 contains empty nvidia kernal and glx rmps due to licensing restrictions...
go to the nvidia website and download the rpms, then follow the instructions in the readme for modifying the xf86config file...
the yast2 updater can get these, but i recommend going to nvidia yerself

go to the nvidia website and download the rpms
That is exactly what caused all the problems in the first place. Downloaded rpm's, installed them, reboot: and BAM -- X is dead.

Hey guys, I found this (http://sdb.suse.de/en/sdb/html/tsieden_fsc-mobile-h-sles7install.html#3) looking for help.
The procedure differs slightly from the straight install, apparently this is what you are supposed to use in case you have a conflict. And I know, it uses 7.3 as an example.
Anyone wanna try and post the conclusions? I don't dare touching my machine, I really don't want to screw it up so I have to reformat.

kmewhort,
Try to install the glx and the nvidia kernel package with the SAME
version numbers, have you?... and then follow the readme file
instructions in the nvidia glx-package.
You will find a lot of technical hints and related stuff.
Btw. I've used SaX2 for the nvidia driver and graphics settings. Yast2
with its nv turned out to install the wrong driver for my platform. The nv driver
did not work correctly with my gforce 3 Ti200. The Yast2 update option i've not checked out.
Pixel salad in StarOffice and a long, long bug search was enough.
Klaus
PS:
Maybe u ve merely forgotten to start a windowmanager. X alone is not enough,
it is an interface platform. The startx script usually needs an entry which
manager is to be started. Can you leave the "Blank screen"
by pushing Ctrl,Alt,Backspace? If this is the case you are in X, and X is probably ok. and a
windowmanger could not be loaded.

Besides the answers given below (on how to replace the SuSE dummies by NVIDIA updates and running the switch.. scripts I have one simple question:
Do you wait long enough for X to start?
Because as I got to know I am not the only one who's patience is stressed by a very slow start of the x-server (at least 30 seconds!). So I originally thought it didn't work at all.

Martin
I am running SuSE8.0 and added a MX420 to a motherboard with onboard video. I ran Sax2 and it started Yast2 to online update the drivers. It seems to work OK.

I am also having trouble. When i start X an NVidia splash screen appears, then dissapears, but when the graphical login appears the graphics are screwed up and the computer completely locks up. The mouse wont even move. There are no errors listed in the log file, which i have attached.
3Ddiag doesn't find any problems.
I have an althon 800 with a Leadtek Winfast GeForce 2 MX
Any help appreciated.

Hey I have Suse 8.0, and when i load the Nvidia drivers X won't load up, it flashes a few times and just stays a black screen ! How annoying. If i use the default crummy drivers with suse it will work fine but i want nvidias.. does anybody know how to fix their blank screen problem ?

I just finally got these drivers to work with SuSE8.0 What I eventually had to do was downloaded the NVIDIA_kernel-1.0-2960.src.rpm file, rpm --rebuild that file, then it will print out a bunch of stuff, and create a new kernel rpm file for you. Look for a line that says Wrote - blah blah and it'll tell you where it put it. Then rpm -ivh that newly created kernel rpm file. If that all works out, then all you need is to install the regular NVIDIA_GLX-1.0-2960.suse80.i386.rpm file and install that next. Then edit the XF86config file just like it says to do. For me, I also had to add an option to the config to get mine to work.
Option "IgnoreEDID" "true"
It took me forever, basically the only problems were that I needed to install the source kernel file, instead of the stock one for SuSE8.0, and I needed to add the IgnoreEDID option. After that it ran perfect. Here's my config file too...

My problems were also solved when I did a --rebuild to the source RPM of the kernel. After that I just followed the standard procedure and everything works fine now. Well, almost :D
Every time I start a 3D-game or app, it says that I don't have any 3D hardware configured. However, when I close the notification, the game/app starts normally, with 3D support. Do you know what I have to change to get rid of those messages? I have the 3D acceleration-box checked in display settings in YaST
Wanted to say thanks to all who have given very valuable information, LaoTzuTao, and those who gave the tip about recompiling the src.rpm kernel driver.
It works great for me now. I had ALL the same problems listed in this thread, luckely nVidia gave a URL to here for me to browse, that was very cool.
Also just wanted to say i'm using :
SuSE 8.0
GeForce 2 MX 500
XFree86 4.2.0
And using "rpm --rebuild <NIVIDIA_kernel.src.rpm>"
installing that RPM it leaves, then the GLX rpm works great with : 1.0-3132 build(s).
Just changed my XF86Config to include "glx", removed "dri" , and used the "nvidia" driver , and i've tested Quake3Arena and it plays VERY nice.
Have a good one all :O)
Everything worked fine when I rebuilded sources myself and the upgraded them. But before that I needed to install Deveploment Kit to make the compilation work.

I've had the Probs with Suse 7.3 -- Only it gave me a blank screen before it was finished with the intallation.
I changed to Mandrake 8.2 :D -- No Probs anymore. (Mandrake 8.2 is as easy as Winows XP)
