AnyDVD HD or AnyHDDVD is on the way
Preliminary reports over at the new SlySoft support forum indicate that SlySoft is hard at work developing AnyDVD HD, a new software product that is designed to help decrypt HD DVD movies (HD DVD-ROMs) on the fly. This is a logical evolution for the company behind the famous AnyDVD app, which is an excellent piece of software that allows users to decrypt DVD discs on-the-fly. This is great news for HD DVD owners who wish to back up their HD DVD movies. The SlySoft support team is top of the line, as they openly ask their users to send in information on any new discs that AnyDVD has trouble with. With the help of their users, SlySoft continually updates AnyDVD to handle any new DVD protections such as ARccOS and RipGuard.

The move to AnyDVD HD should come at no surprise as SlySoft is a company that is famous for their decryption, burning and disc backup utilities (AnyDVD, Clone CD, Clone DVD). SlySoft will not make any official statements on the product for 3-5 weeks, as they have not yet issued any press releases.

And although they have not yet issued any official statements on the new software, we have learned some information about the upcoming product from SlySoft developer comments on their forum. The early Alpha version of AnyDVD HD has successfully decrypted all of the HD DVD movies that they have tested with. They are also working to implement a “Remove annoying trailers” function, that will allow users to automatically remove non-skip sections of an HD DVD such as the FBI warning, the Universal “HD DVD is great” screen and others. Very nice! There will also be an upgrade path for users who have purchased AnyDVD in the past, although there are currently no concrete details on exactly what type of discount will be offered.

Why AnyDVD HD instead of AnyDVD Blu-ray? The SlySoft developers claim that HD DVD was a logical first target for them because the format has no region coding and less DRM capabilities (eg; no BD+). So will SlySoft ever release a Blu-ray decryption utility? Possibly, but their current focus is solely on HD DVD back up capabilities. Once AnyDVD HD has been launched, they will take a look at the Blu-ray format.

So just how does AnyDVD HD work? Has SlySoft managed to really crack AACS? For now, no one is sure just how AnyDVD HD will work exactly. Chances are that we will not know how it works in the future either, as it is a closed-source commercial product that SlySoft has an interest in protecting. A SlySoft developer has indicated that “nobody’s gonna have to painfully search for title keys in the memory of some badly written player.“. It will definitely be interesting to see just how well the program functions once it is released. Hopefully, I will be able to get in on the Beta-testing program once SlySoft is ready to test the product.

Easy. An automated solution likely based on muslix64's findings.

Anywho, it will be interesting to see how this all plays out.

It could end up leading to revoked software player keys, so you wouldn't even be able to watch HDDVDs on your PC anymore, let alone copy them.. (That highly depends on the strength of AACS however)

AACS is thought to be much stronger than the old CSS method that DVDs used.

Not strong enough apparently.

100% true, Slysoft never figured out anything themselves. None the less its good to see people have an option for backing up their HD-DVD's (possibly).

I´m sort of "out of the loop" when it comes to ripping DVDs with freeware tools, but considering that DVD Decrypter barely works anymore these days (obviously, because development has been stopped), I´m primarly using AnyDVD and DVD Shrink which works with 99% of all new movies.

I totally agree. But in the US, there will be trouble. The "Fair Use" clause allows it, but the DMCA does not. So it's still pretty grey area in my opinion.

I personally would like to be able to make backups of any DVD I paid for. Especially since I heard that pressed discs have a more limited lifetime than ones you actually burn yourself.

but considering that DVD Decrypter barely works anymore these days (obviously, because development has been stopped)

Actually, I think DVD Decrypter is still widely used today. Look at freeware tools like RipIt4me, which apparently many people are using. This tool requires DVD Decrypter to function, and the site has nearly 4 million hits in less than a year.

The reason development has stopped is NOT because it barely works, but rather because his tool was deemed illegal and he was no longer allowed to work on or distribute it (or he would be sued/jailed). LightningUK, the developer of DVD Decrypter, now spends some of his time on the excellent (and legal) ImgBurn utility, which is basically DVD Decrypter without the ripping engine.

Not strong enough apparently.

So far, the fault does not appear to be in AACS itself, but instead the software player (i.e. WinDVD) and the way it stores decryption keys easily accessible in memory. This is what makes me believe software players could become revoked (disabled) in the long term.

However, since Windows Vista is so heavy with DRM, there might be a way to safely play HD-DVD on that platform, making it much harder to copy.

Oh, I know it works, I just meant that it barely works with newer movies with advanced copy protections like ARccOS or RipGuard which AnyDVD seems to have almost no problem with. I can also understand why he (LightningUK) stopped the development, he had been stupid to continue and face serious fines or even jailtime just because of developing a good and popular DVD ripper.

I´ll checkout RipIt4Me, I´m always interested in good and tiny freeware tools. Thanks.

Yes. I read about that yesterday after I found the download link for AnyDVD HD.

I in no way expected AACS to be foolproof (hence the key words "So far" in my post ;)) Although I do admit I didn't think it would be cracked this soon.

I hope they add Blu-ray support soon...not that I'm going to be copying a 25 to 50 GB movie ANYTIME soon. I can only imagine how damn long it would take.
