Why would you need to use the ps2 as a dvd-player when you can get a better one for less than 50$ ? :headexplode:

I think the hidden mode is meant for games only.

:D No but seriously, there is a hidden hd mode in teh ps2 believe it or not... but I believe it's just 480p which is the res most games on the ps2 use nowadays.

A PS2 even over component will only display at 480i. I'm not sure if you could even get it to display in 480p. The only game that I know of that even goes above 480 is GT4, but I'm sure that is something built into the game, where as the software that the ps2 uses to play movies probably isn't made to run in more than 480i.

It's not hidden, you can use it in a few games, ATV Offroad fury 2, GT4, and probably others.

"Select a HD 720p or 1080i setting to give a clearer, crisper picture quality for all PS2 games."

Yeah ,just for games I think.

But if not ,A generic dvd player cant do 1080i can it?

I know nothing about this stuff.

So there is 3rd part ysoftware to enable this, as interesting as it sounds, I doubt that dvd would get a boost, because it sounds like it just stretches the image, and doesn't upscale at all. All I'm getting from the article is that it will get a boost because it doesn't interlace the signal, so your LCD tv doesn't need to de-interlace it. Since they even save it is preferred to run in 480p, that tells me right there that it doesn't upscale.

Upconverting DVD players can. Most models are about $100 retail. The best one is probably what was talked about in this thread.

There are many games on the PS2 that support 480p, and later revisions of the PS2 also support 480p DVD playback.

There are quite a few PS2 games that support 480p and GT4 supports "1080i" which isn't really 1080i, it's some sort of upscaled 540p (I think), but anyway it's upscaled, it doesn't actually render in 1080i. Anyway this Xploder thing sounds like a hoax. If the PS2 outputs 480p for the DVDs, you're not gonna be able to get any better than that really.

If you were to use a proper DVD player with a good scaler, then you'd probably get much much better results.
