View Full Version : What card should I get to hold me over?

The only two things I need to order for my new computer build is the memory (still researching) and the video card.

I don't want to buy a real video card until the R600 comes out. I'm hoping it will dominate the benchmarks, and I can put 2xR600s in crossfire on my BX2 motherboard.

If the R600 sucks on the other hand, I'll just buy a single 8800GTX.

Whatever I buy, I will be watercooling, so my point is that I'm going to be sinking a lot of money into the video card setup, and I don't want to buy one until the R600 is launched. However, I have all these new parts sitting around my place, and I want to put them together. So I want a card to hold me over.

Here is what I need...

An inexpensive PCIe card that I can re-sell for around the same price when the R600 is launched in March. It should be able to fully run Aero on Windows Vista. What are your recommendations?

Not sure what price range you're looking for, but something like this should be able to handle Aero smoothly:

7600GS (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814130075)

And if thats too much, these are probably decent too:

7300GT (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814133172)

6600LE (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814108005)

I don't know the exact requirements for Aero though so you might want to look up some Aero performance reviews.

I'm thinking about buying this piece of junk to hold me over.

I don't care about games, I just want it to run aero until I decide on a real deal CPU.

I'd look up some Aero performance numbers first though. It actually uses some pretty advanced effects from what I can tell. I don't know if a card like that would be able to handle it smoothly at a decent resolution.

IMO, 128bit memory and 4 pixel pipes is the minimum you should settle for any more. Whether you're gaming or not.

I think I'm going to bite on that 7100GS. I could only find one review, and it basically said it was fine for Aero. Hell, it's $25 after the rebate. I could probably ebay it for $25 shipped once I'm done.

I looked on nVidia's website, and from the looks of it, the 7100GS is basically their Vista-aero-for-cheap card.

Well you definitely can't beat the price. :D

I doubt it, since a 7600GT is about roughly the equivalent of an 6800Ultra.. (which is roughly 10-15% faster than a 6800GT)..

How long abouts til the r600 comes out?

I am already dead set on a 8800GTS, but I am hoping that the r600 release will cause its price to drop.

A salesperson at fry's electronics was being a dick to me earlier so I think I might just buy an 8800gts from them and return it in 30 days, and hopefully by then the price drops.
