I have a 1kw PSU and I'd like to know if the PSU always consumes 1kw of power or does it only consume the amount of power required by the system?

Thanks

It consumes the amount used by your system + 100% - efficiency rating.

So, if your PSU has an efficiency rating of 80% and it was a 400W PSU, and you were pushing it to the max, it would suck 500W from your wall outlet.

And, if it were a 1000W PSU like yours, and had an efficiency rating of 80%, and your system consumed 400W, then again, it would still suck 500W from your wall outlet.

So basically, you take 100% - efficiency rating of PSU = less efficiency

less efficiency * system power consumption = efficiency add

system power consumption + efficiency add = actual power draw
