I was wondering if anybody has done the above and if they've had compatibility issues: I need to have three monitors available and I'm currently running dual 6800GTs (in SLI for games, non-SLI when I need to work) in XP.

The 6800s are getting long in the tooth (COH and the upcoming supreme commander are very slow) and I'd like to move to an 8800 main card but also keep one of the two 6800 GTs to drive the extra two monitors (of course no SLI here).

Would this work? Or would the nvidia drivers get confused? What kind of driver should I download? It seems there are 8800-specific and everythingelse-specific drivers out right now, which kind of makes me worry...

It should work fine, you would just need to get a modded driver that has both the 8800gtx and 6800gt in it. I'm guessing you can find one at laptopvideo2go.com. The 8800gtx will become the primary card, and have the primary display, and you could put the other two displays on the 6800gt. It would work the exact same as dual 6800gts in non sli mode. The advantage is that you won't have to restart to game, and an 8800gtx is about double a 6800GT sli. :)

If I get some play time in the next few days, I can probably try it for you. I have an 8800gtx and couple of 6800gts lying around.

yeah, this is how I thought about setting it up (2nd and 3rd monitor on the 6800gt) but the fact that the 8800 drivers are 8800-only makes me wonder, yeah, I could mod the .inf to install with the GT, but will it have issues recognizing it etc.?

I can't be 100% without testing, but I'm guessing it should work. The 97.92 driver here from laptopvideo2go has both the 6800gt and 8800gtx in the same driver. http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/index.php?drivers

EDIT: I just remembered that when I got my 8800gtx, I wanted to test running games across 3 monitors, so I had my 8800gtx as primary, and had the second monitor on the 8800, and the third on the 6800. If you run a full screen game, it runs only on the primary display. If you want to span all 3 monitors, you can run the game windowed mode, and stretch it. Obviously, it looks like crap cause everything is out of scale, but I was able to get good fps running across 3 monitors like that. (I think UT2004 was still getting 90 @ 3072 x 768, and I had details cranked too. :)) I had the 6800gt drivers installed before, and through the 97.44 drivers on after, which didn't have support for the 6800gt, but everything still worked. So I do know that it will work, as your not going to be doing graphic intensive things on the other monitors anyway.

thanks for your help, I went to the store today and I was about ready to get an 8800gts but I noticed that they had a big sale going on for the 7900GTOs (they had been out of stock for a long time, but 15 came in last week out of the blue) and only a few left ($220) and so I ended up getting one of them given that it was about half the price of the 8800... I guess I'll go through this next year or so when there will be more dx10 games out.

I guess I should be able to just plug the 7900 in without reinstalling anything, given that the drivers support it...

I tried Vista 32 + FW100.59 and 2 8800GTX SLI with a 7900GT on EVGA 122CK
It does not work. With Nvidia-Ex activate or not in bios setup.
The driver install, but they are disactivate (compatibility error message) when Vista restart.
