I recently bought a C2D E6600 to replace a pentium D 930. My motherboard is Intel D975xbx ver.304, which should support C2D and newest BIOS too. I simply swapped the 930 out with E6600. I ran memtest for 24 hours without any problem.

However, when I boot into windows XP, the system just reboot randomly ( within 5 minutes). I tried removing sound card and USB ports but no use. And when I tried to reinstall windowsXP, the installation hangs everytime when it's detecting devices.....

So I put the Pentium D 930 back and everything went back to normal. ( 100% stable) It can't be the CPU cooler as I saw the temp with C2D is 40C in BIOS... ( compare with 50ish with pentium 930). I am running out of ideas here.

Could it be a bad box'ed CPU?? I assume a bad CPU should fail memtest, no? Is there a patch or driver for C2D I am not aware of?

Intel Badaxe V.304
P D 930
Audigy2
Antec 500W
Raid0 seagate 300GB x2
Logitech G7

did u check the windows event log for any errors around the reboots?

Can you just swap CPU's and keep Windows happy? I wonder if there are any CPU specific system stuff that needs to be modified.

The hard reboots are like when you actually press the reset button. So it didnt leave any error log.

Yeah, swapped back to pentium D 930 and everything worked great.

It seems like I have no choice but RMA this E6600 I bought on Amamazon.com and I really hate this cause it's gonna take at least 1 month.

Okay, just received my replacement CPU. THe new CPU works perfectly once installed.

So to answer my own question: No you dont need to change anything in windowsXP upgrading from pentium D to Core 2 duo.

A replacement in 3 days? Must be some kind of a record.

Getting a bad cpu is rare and for the retailer to ship first says a lot for their customer service. Care to share with us who you purchased the cpu from?
Glad you got your new system up and running, :)
