Ok, NOW it has been truly cracked (http://www.boingboing.net/2007/02/13/bluray_and_hddvd_bro.html).

It's official. AACS has been completely defeated within only a few months of its deployment, whereas it took years to develop. (Prior to this it was only partially defeated.)

This means HD-DVD discs and BD discs are now as easy to copy as DVD's.

EDIT: Not fully cracked, but better than before. See below.

*goes to store and buys ten 750GB HDDs to allow for enough space to archive HD DVD collection*

This is good news, I certainly don't condone piracy but DRM sucks and I wish the movie and music companies would realize it's pointless. I buy all my CD's and DVD's legitimately (mostly imports) and I rip ALL my CD's for my own use. I rip DVD's only if they are region coded and I need to strip that crap out. There would be a lot of discs that I wouldn't have bought if I didn't have the ability to copy them. If the movie and music industry wants my money they have to cater to MY needs. I have a pretty nice home theater setup but haven't bothered to upgrade to HD-DVD or Blu-Ray mainly because the very thought of all the possible DRM crap just turns me off. Sorry - end of rant. :p

It's a pity that Microsoft had to spend so much time implementing this crippled DRM system in Vista. If they would have skipped it, just think how much more potential the OS could have had.. i.e. they could have focused on other (IMHO more important) areas.

It's not really cracked. Someone discovered a single key that currently works like a skeleton key to decrypt the disks. All AACS has to do is revoke the key, which is likely only applicable for the particular software that the guy was using, and it's back to square one.

Ah, so it is. At first when I read this it sounded like they had obtained some kind of master key that could be used to generate more device keys as they wanted to, effectively making the whole thing useless because blacklisting device keys would become moot.

It did seem a bit anticlimactic that the key they posted was "only" a 128-bit key. Strong but not impossibly strong.

If they obtain enough of these device keys, I would imagine that discovering a master key wouldn't be terribly difficult. Judging by the method used to obtain this particular key, I think it will be difficult for the ISV to come up with a method that will prevent future keys from being found from this particular device. They will have to encrypt the USB communication somehow, which I guess would require a major firmware rework and change in the driver, plus a major change in all of the player software out there.

it does sound like there is more and more poeple that are comming up with creative ways to extract the keys. eventually i would think that there would be too many keys in the wild for them to start banning all these keys.
