Almost the same price, both Dual core but with 800Mhz vs. 1066Ghz and 3.4Ghz vs. 1.8Ghz, which one is a better buy? I can't go with higher-end CPU, so if/when I jump on the Intel's bandwagon, I would definitely start out with one of these CPUs. Any Pros and Cons?

Core 2 Duo all the way.
Don't let mhz speed fool you. Google some benchmarks.
And you can overclock the hell out of the E4300.

The 945 would probobly be a downgrade from your 3200+ in many single threaded apps, definatly go for the c2d. If you just want a super cheap dual core upgrade, go for the X2/Opty series, itll be cheaper and you wont have to invest in a new platofrm.

The E4300 is a MIND SHATTERING bargain if you don't mind dabbeling in a little overclocking. If you invest in a half decent air cooling system, you could probably get the thing to run stable at double it's stock speeds.

It's amazing how cheaply you could put together a system for.

$150 for 2GB of decent OCing RAM
$170 for this CPU
$135 for a rock solid P965 motherboard (overclocks well)
$300 for an 8800GTS

~$150 for a case, PSU, and drives

and for $900 you have a top of the line computer that would blow the pants off a $3000 dell.

In my opinion it would be better to go ahead and switch to a 775 based platform.

Intel is destroying AMD right now in terms of performance and in the future when Intel unleashes the bombshell known as Penryn (45nm successor to the Core2) you'll be able to cheaply upgrade to a quad core as Penryn will still use a 775 socket.

If I don't have the $$$ for the 680i or 975 chipset mobo, nor SLI video cards, which is the best mobo to get, yet still be able to take advantage of Intel Core 2 Duo all the way to the Extreme (Quad core) when I do have the $$$ (future proof mobo)?

Asus P5B Vanilla - $124.99
Asus P5B Deluxe - $178.99

I got the vanilla, check my sig for my overclock. The deluxe is even better.

something with the P965 express chipset. It is an excellent overclocking chipset, and some great mobos can be had for as little as $130. I would recommend the Gigabyte DS3.

Yeah its hard to go wrong with the Intel 965P. This is my first Intel CPU & system ever and its been really nice with no hangups as of yet.

I read a lot of people having heat issue with the 975X chipset mobos (at least of Asus' anyway). Another question regarding SLI: Is Intel's chipset not capable of doing SLI at the moment?

D945 CPU is great for work (Photoshop, Audio, Video, etc.), but not for games. Go for E4300. Or just sell your singlecore AMD and 7900GTX and get cheap X2 4600+ and 8800GTX.. You may also consider 2GB of RAM.

I don't think my 3200 worth half-sh*t now. Neither is my 7900GTX. Both of them combine can't even buy a X2 4600 now.:thumbdwn:

The Core2 E4300 would even be better than a Pentium D 950!!! If you like to overclock, the E4300 can't be beat because of its 9X multiplier. That's nice and low for overclocking. People have been able to get 3GHz+ with this CPU. It may be the new runt of the Core 2 lineup, but it's better than any Pentium D!!!
