I was going to title the thread "Do it Thump?" and I didn't want to confuse folks. These are suggestions intended to help if you have decided to try onboard sound with the MS HDA software.
My major focus here will be getting real rich bass.
So from your toolbar go to the speaker icon > playback devices > speakers > properties. Under properties > levels tab - set the level you want, > enhancements tab - tick bass boost, settings - select freq and db.
I'd advise trying 3 or 6db for a boost, more than that may be too heavy with an EQ.

Go to the Advanced tab - select 24bit + 44k and up, whatever suits your tastes. If you select a freq and your sound goes away drop to a lower freq.

I use the EQ in WMP 11. Be careful with the low end. You can get an overloaded clipped sound fast. Try 2-5db boost on 62 and 31Hz.

I've been using the SRS WoW features for a while. Set the TruBass to 0-3 max. You should already have quite a bit. For WoW I use 11-13 for metal and heavy aggressive music. For ballads and soft rock where I want an expanded sound I use 16-21 WoW, and rarely as high as 24.

Yes, a sound card is still best and this is a good way to make the most of working without one if you decide to do so under Vista.
