Since the General Linux section of NV is almost at a halt in dicussion, I figured I'd come up with an ice breaker. Thread topper says it all.

I use Ubuntu 6.10 on my Dell PowerEdge server (evilghost's old machine, thanks buddy!). I really bought it to back up my important files, but dabbled into the Linux world with such things as Apache (www.sixstorm.com), Samba, OpenSSH, and of course, Beryl. So now, not only do I use it as a backup server, but I also use it as a test desktop for learning Linux.

What about you?

Kanotix (http://kanotix.com/) and Dreamlinux (http://www.dreamlinux.com.br/english/index.html) are my two favs.

Kanotix is as fast as I've seen straight out of the box and never ever a driver issue. Dreamlinux would need a lot added for a power user like evilghost, maybe you too six, but very stable and the the multimedia setup is top notch.

This reminds me, I need another hdd, thanks!

Have ubuntu 6.10 on my desktop. Just acquired an old gateway laptop. It has a P3, 10 gb hdd, and 128 mb of ram. Have KDE Ark linux on it now. It's a really simplified distro of linux, but it's the only thing I have that will install on the machine. Ubuntu freezes the system, xbuntu freezes it. Going to give fluxbuntu a try when I go buy some more cd-rs from the store later tonight.

Any suggestions for a distro that would run on the lappy? Have a flash drive with dsl and puppy linux on it somewhere but I'm not too fond of those. I'll just be using the laptop for general internet browsing.

btw.. that dream linux looks pretty nice. Might give that a try on my desktop.

Home, Server, Ubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake LTS
Home, Laptop, Ubuntu Feisty Fawn
Home, Laptop (Wifes), Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft
Work, Desktop, Ubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft

I'm thinking of going pure Debian on the server.

Just tried out Sabayon Linux (beryl built in distro) and I really don't like it. Prolly the only reason I don't is because with Ubuntu (or any other type of Ubuntu), you get lightning fast results. With Sabayon, loading is slow . . . . very slow. I guess it's more for the graphical extensive systems?

Anywho, I've never dabbled into the K desktop so I'm trying out Kubuntu on VMWare this afternoon.

Ok, so the KDE desktop is alright, but I still like Gnome better.

Guess since this is the only real active Linux thread on this whole board, are there any optimizations or tweaks that I can do to speed up my Gnome+Ubuntu+Beryl desktop?

I find some pretty large differences in performance between linux drivers. Overall I got the best performance from the 9746s. Ran XGL very well before I tried to tweak it, and destroyed it.:p

May I ask why you are running XGL instead of Beryl? Just curious.

I installed the latest SVNs of Beryl from whoever that one guy is (Beryl 2.0RC3). I was playing around with the configurations in Beryl Manager and my Desktop Cube function quit working. And when you purge Beryl, remove SVN repos and reinstall, it apparently doesn't wanna downgrade to RC1 lol. At least I know those work.

Was running, I just wanted to test both out, tried XGL first is all, no particular reason. But I really trashed my installation trying to tweak it . As of today I'm waiting on taxes back to grab another hdd as one died on me and I have way to much on my xp hdd to wipe it. I'll post more on my performance with beryl soon as I can get a distro up and running wiith it.

I'll just have to make a hard decision on what distro to go with. I had way to many problems with ubuntu, so I'll probably go back to Dream Linux.

I'll have to check out DreamLinux. Sabayon Linux sucks (Vista-like rough on your hardware lol) and it isn't efficient like Ubuntu. Post some screenies when you get a chance!!!

I'm glad I saw your post on Sabayon, that was on my "to try" list. I should have this set up again with Dream this week. Not a convenience thing, it's a sucky kind of money thing, gotta feed them kids. :p

Couple of thing s about Dream, it's based on Kanotix, which I always found very fast and stable. It's multimedia tools are top notch and NV drivers installed easily, but it is rather pared down.

Appearance wise, beautiful. Looks much like a mac set up.

Debian - the most reliable and stable distro I have ever used. At work all our servers are RHEL4 and CENTOS 4.4 but my desktop and home servers are all Debian.

Debian GNU/Linux since 2000. Unstable for my wife, unstable/experimental for me, stable for servers at home and work alike.

I'm still testing the limits of Ubuntu with add-on software such as other desktop environments, beta programs like Beryl and XGL, system optimization, and just basic everyday things such as web surfing, email, office apps and so forth.

I'm also hoping to install Ubuntu on my girlfriend's PC (along with XP in VMWare Server for college stuff) at some point this year. Still learning teh L1nuX!!!111 :D

I've been trying to run any linux in virtual pc and vmware server. Easier than burnng cds to try out a distro. Did you have trouble with screen corruption after loading the image?

I never did using VMWare Workstation on XP/2000.

Never had trouble you mean? It seems somewhat common, but no good answers. Ubuntu looks crystal clear til the desktop loads, but I can't read anything if I manage to get a terminal open.

One fix I found was to change the default from 24bit to 16, It's not a big deal really as I'm waiting for another hdd to install too. I just thought this would be nice to play with in the interim. Thanks.

I love to have performance, smallness, and the ability to configure what i am using, so...
Gentoo, of course!

All in good humor :)

I'm trying hard not to start a distowar or a flaming thread but I can't just hold all of it inside. It's nothing personal, but somehow Gentoo users always remind me of Windows-fanatics. They use every single available knob and lever to tune performance of their box. At the end they spend significant time to gain insignificant advantage over stock configuration. I would understand running Gentoo on a box with very little mass storage space (assuming everything would be compiled outside the box), but with modern hardware this is hardly necessary. IIRC 170 MiB harddrive used to be more than enough for Debian potato.

Ahah cmon!
mine is only... D'oh! 1.8GB!
Luckily my executables and libraries are smaller than the others cause they lack functions i don't need :p I'm trying hard not to start a distowar or a flaming thread but I can't just hold all of it inside. What's all of it? Take it easy, i didn't say your distribution sucks, do i?
It's nothing personal, I'll hope!

i'm a bit confused...to gain insignificant advantage over stock configuration.
Well, i would'nt call it insignificant, but if you're happy with your distribution and we don't want to start a flame right here, then i'll call insignificant too ;)I would understand running Gentoo on a box with very little mass storage space (assuming everything would be compiled outside the box), but with modern hardware this is hardly necessary. Good Debian to you ;)
