Hello all,

I've installed a PCI NVidia Geforce4 MX440 se in my RedHat 8.0 system, and installed the -4191 driver. The problem that I have is that most of the time the X server does not recognize the 64MB VideoRam on the board, but claims to have probed and found 2MB. This is from the /var/log/XFree86.0.log file.

Putting in a VideoRam 65536 line doesn't override this, X still probes and finds 2MB.

Funny thing is that sometimes it works, but I haven't yet reproduced this.

Any help appreciated, regards, XYZ.

I remember reading on this forum somewhere that the nVidia driver ignored the VideoRam option, which would explain why it won't work when you specify it.

But as for why it won't work itself... umm... do you have access to another card that you might be able to swap out with this one? Or could you try installing driver 3123 instead of 4191? (it's available from http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?IO=linux_display_archive)

Is there anything in /var/log/messages that might explain the issue? Could you post the XFree86.0.log file somewhere?

Thanks for the reply. I downloaded the source RPMs for both the 4191 and the older 3123 drivers, and compiled. The 4191 gave the exact same problem: No X, garbled text consoles, only 2MB recognized. Choosing 640x480 res with 8 bit color makes it run, so memory problem seems the cause.

The 3123 driver works perfectly... I have attached both XFree86.0.logs.

Card is PV-T97L-QTF6:
XFX GeForce4 MX440SE 64MB DDR TV-out PCI
BIOS is 4.17.00.52.16

It works for me now but I do feel this bug should be mentioned to NVidia. Any ideas?

Kind regards, XYZ.

Yeah, probably should. Email them (linux-bugs@nvidia.com) with your system specs, exact card and chip, etc., etc., and say that 3123 works but 4191 detects only 2MB of RAM. I'm sure they'll be interested (unless they already know about it...).
