I freshly installed XP Pro on my system a month ago with the Cat 3.1 drivers for my Radeon 9700 Pro.
I have downloaded the 3.2 drivers but cannot uninstall the 3.1's.
I cannot select the drivers through the Add/Remove programs even though they are listed there but I can remove the control panel. Am I doing something wrong?? Should I remove the control panel before or after the drivers?

Where you messing around with the registry too?

Nope.
Just the drivers & refreshforce.
As I say, I select the drivers in Add/Remove menu but cannot tick the boxes. I have tried in safe mode as well with no success.

I had a bit of trouble uninstalling the 3.1 control panel.

I uninstalled drivers, rebooted, attempted to uninstall cp, but control panel was still in the "add or remove program" list. Despite several tries at getting rid of the control panel, it didn't uninstall. When rebooting, I got a dialog box saying that control panel was exiting because the drivers weren't installed.

I then took desperate, yea, even foolhardy, measures. I deleted the control panel's installation directory.

I installed the new drivers, rebooted, and then ran the installation program for the new control panel. I selected the repair option to "reinstall" the control panel, and it worked.

During the middle of this, I was wondering if I'd need to reinstall windows, but I got lucky. Hope it works out ok for you, also.

Take a look over at rage3d to see if anyone else has had the same trouble. Perhaps try one of the driver cleaner programs before taking desperate, risky measures like I did. (Wish I had thought of that before I put my installation at risk.)

In a worst case scenario where you have to reinstall windows XP, try doing a "repair install" before formatting everything. If it works, a repair install will keep your data safe, saving the trouble of reinstalling it all.

The best bets are to check at rage3d and try a driver cleaner program.

All sorted now.
I installed the Cat 3.1s over the top of the original installation & then uninstalled them fine.
I ran Driver Cleaner & then then installed the Cat 3.2's.
