Anybody see this?

"NPD sales show Blu-ray has now officially surpassed all HD DVD sales since inception. (http://www.videostoremag.com/news/html/breaking_article.cfm?article_id=10323)"

You just wait 'til those Chinese HD-DVD players hit the market... YOU JUST WAIT!

They are ahead but it is not that big a lead actually. Here is a quote from that article.

Buoyed by a rush of titles this year, Blu-ray has racked up a slight lead in unit sales — 100 units to every 98.71 units of HD DVD — since the inception of both formats, according to First Alert data.

Sure its a very minor lead, but 6 months ago it was "blu-ray is doomed", 4 weeks ago it was "blu-ray sales ok, but hd-dvd still has sold more", now if this is true I think its a pretty big change from where things were. no?

Looks like Sony's Blu-Ray strategy might actually work.

Doesn't make sense to the informed. HD players offer slightly improved pic quality and the players are less expensive.
Sony has the marketing down like BOSE.

You should all be hoping for HD-DVD to make a comeback. It will be a cold and sad day when Blu-Ray wins the war. :(

Personally, i just care about the movie bitrate. Both formats use same video codecs. If you want the best picture quality, you'll understand it.

Yup... Casino Royal next month, and in May POTC 1 and 2, and it is rumored that Spider-man 1 and 2 might be coming out in May also.

d00d!! All you need is two speakers and the acoustimass module! It sounds the same as have 7 speakers!~!!

It is a shame, however, that the misinformed dip**** public is going to casue movies to look inferior the next 10 years until a new format.

I think the new formats look great. Keep in mind this is coming from someone who actually has the hardware tho I am not a video nerd so I may not have the discerning eye others have.

As far as the speakers, I use Yamaha Soundbars on my three home theater systems. Not perfect, but it is passable (tho I really want actual surround in my main setup I just don't want to sacrafice the walls in my new house).

Blu-ray and HD DVD are essentially the same spec-wise so it's kind of shame they couldn't work out their differences.

The quality does seem to vary more on blu-ray b/c they don't all use the same codec/bitrates. But, when comparing similar codecs/bitrates I don't think one magically looks better than the other (i.e. I think blu-ray and HD DVD look pretty much the same).

Surprisingly (to me at least), is how well some of the MPEG-2 blu-ray movies hold up PQ-wise against against HD DVD and blu-ray movies using VC-1 (or AVC). I think Kingdom of Heaven looks great and it's just using MPEG-2. I guess I figured the newer codecs would inherently be superior just b/c they're newer.

Yes, agree with you here.

From my personal experience, MPEG-2 keeps better the sharpness of the image & looks very good with high bitrate (>20Mbps). The problem is that with lower bitrate, it's too blocky (<16Mbps). H264 is less blocky even with low bitrate (+-10 Mbps), but, it sacrifices all the sharpness of the image.

Think it's about the way the codec filters the frequencies of the image. After all, the details of the image are in the high freq components (in a 2D DFT representation of the image).

It'll be interesting to see if it changes after the PS3 launch. I think in North America, there have been some that think the PS3 is what helped make up the deficit so quickly but others that think it was mostly due to more new releases (around the first of the year) being in blu-ray. I wonder if Europe will help determine that or not?

I would imagine that even if it were 1 / 10 people who get the PS3 and buy a blu ray disc, that would start to help tip the numbers in their favor even more. I wouldn't even consider going out and buying a player right now because of the two formats, but since I have a PS3 it is a nice bonus to get a HD movie. I think that type of mentality will help them out a lot.

It's not helping HD DVD's cause that it's not being promoted in retail channels. At Best Buy they have two Blu-Ray players hooked up to HDTVs with not a single HD DVD setup to be found. Makes it a lot easier to push it on the ignorant masses who probably don't even know HD DVD exists.

I'm not sure about our local Best Buy. I know they have the blu-ray player setup but I'm not sure about HD DVD. At Circuit City they have both setup though.

If BR wins, Sony will keep the prices high. That's a given. I think the only thing that has BR still rolling are the good titles and that's it.

I simply have more support for Blu Ray has IMO they have by far a better movie selection as opposed from HD DVD. I made a thread about this few months back and my opinion stll holds strong to this day, even the upcoming list of blu ray releases is more promising to me than the HD DVD release, but only time will tell I guess :)

I do not understand why so many of you are referring to high prices? If you are referring to expensive players then ya I understand, but in terms of movie pricing they are just about the same. Only cases when BR movies are signficantly higher is when it is a dual layer BR Disc, such as Kingdom of Heaven and Alien vs. Predator (Greaat movie btw :D) otherwise their usually around the same price point if the movie is released both on blu ray and HD DVD

HAHAHAHA everyone has different opinions, glad to see you like expressing yours in detail. I have the Alien Quadrilogy, I've seen Predator 1st one, I enjoyed it as well with the first two Aliens but I did not enjoy the last ones so much.

I prefer my real surround system... I think the fake surround is overrated, and yes i've heard them b4. I was never a big fan of Bose to begin with. they sound nice, but not my cup of tea!
