View Full Version : Pentium 4 660 3.6GHz vs. Pentium D 945 3.4GHz

A friend of mine has a Dell XPS system with a Pentium 4 3.6GHz. He wants to get a dual core CPU for it, and the Pentium D 945 3.4GHz looks like the best deal. Is this worth the switch? The Pentium 4 has HT, but it's not a dual core CPU. I don't think it's really worth much anyway. He can get a Pentium D 945 for about $170. I told him both CPUs are antiquated, but he doesn't want to buy a new CPU. Will the Pentium D do a better job for him. He does want to go with Windows Vista in a few months.

I may be wrong, but I heard this from somewhere else that Pentium D is not a good processor to use for gaming, or maybe not a wise choice to own? I may have mistunderstood with the kind.

The Pentium D is certainly not the best CPU, but it would probably be better in the long run because the Pentium 4 is still single core despite the fact it has HT.
