Isnt Quantum pretty much a catchy name for the ability to run physics on these more versitiles processing units in the GPU?
The flexibility should allow for example 20 pipes running physics (or whatever) while the rest runs graphics from what Ive heard.
I mean its not really any dedicated hardware part is it?
I think NVIDIA said previously Quantum Physics is a separate layer on the GPU so a separate architecture, I'm not sure though, it might not be the official version and yours might be right.

NVIDIA Quantum Effects™ Technology
Advanced shader processors architected for physics computation deliver amazing performance and visual effects such as smoke, fire, and explosions.
Quoted off NVs site.
Sounds to like its just the ability to use these pretty versitile so called Stream Processors to run physics.
Maybe its related to CUDA and stuff like that, but you can run alot of things on these GPUs
They had that graph on how much faster different tasks would be and all that for example.

Yep, Quantum Effects™ is just another buzzword used only for marketing reasons. If you look more closely to the CUDA API, you can see that it operates only on classical shader units (stream processors)..no special HW at all.

EITHER WAY YOU PUT IT Nvidia still came out the winner, like he said they came out on time and been selling all those cards and ATI has missed out, Any top of world company can come late in there production run and do better than the other guy, they have had an extra 6months to see what Nvidia has and correctly make there's better, There is only one good thing that ATI stays into the game, is us the graphics buyers buying more and more that drives us to have fun to kill to blast or race or fly or what ever it is we are the ones that win here, the price stays just right there for all of us to buy there items. Now if either one of them stop making those cards. We are the ones that will hate it, the PRICE will sky rocket. Its always fun to argue or talk between a bunch of people about who's who and who is winning.

I think the R600 will be fastet then the G80 simply because of all the delays ,they know what the 8800GTX will do and they know if the 8900 come out and has 160 shader ,they want to be able to outperfourm it ,And I do not see them even releaseing the R600 until it is able to beat the Nvidia cards ,I think that is why it is being so delayed. They know if they come out with the R600 and it is just as fast as the 8800 or 8900 then why would you want to update to that card.I look for it to be 20% to 30% faster and then the hard gamers that just want the fastest card will get it.Most hard core gamers don't care who makes it ,they just what the fastest. But if they keep delaying it until Nvidia comes out with a totaly new chip design and they are still haveing to play catch up ,then I look for ATI/AMD just might forget about high end cards and work on lowend cheap DX10 cards and intergrated video chips for the motherboards and go more for the oem products. This is just IMO.

No they did NOT show a Barcelona based system, they showed two R600's running on two high end Opteron's.And the R600 does not have 320 Stream Procs,it has 64 to 80,5D or 4D.

What it will have though is almost totally and completely meaningless,as its incredibly late, and will likely be going up against G81 or god forbid for AMD G90 ! ;and AMD/ati is in allot of hot and stinky water with Wallstreet and the Analysts,as well as being in a grave of Debt.

I suggest any fan of AMD or anyone remotely interested in this company or the future of graphics @ the high end, read the following articles in the order
I have posted them.

I would love to be able to respond to those posts Shodan, but I'm not signing up to overclockers to do so :)

Suffice to say, decent articles, misguided conclusions and definitely your calling out the analysts without having the info/reasons as to WHY amd has issues on the enterprise front leads to some of your extrapolations being flawed.

I didn't write that btw I just copied and pasted from an article. Also the reason why I quoted that was because that seems to imply that there maybe 160 stream processors on a single card.
