Truly a sign of desperation of the file sharing opposition...appealing directly to people's fears of a secure livlihood...
i can't even stop shaking me head, even five minutes after reading it...unreal.

Let's see now, if you buy drugs, you're aiding terrorists, if you swap files your aiding terrorists, if you speak out against the war you're aiding terrorists....

Has anyone ever just wondered why it's all the things the common people do that's aiding terrorists. As opposed to wondering why terrorists are using American made weapons?

I'm of the mind they need to be looking at the manufacturers and sellers of said goods long before the look at every single American. I'm sick of being called a criminal for non-violent acts.

P.S. With that said, no I don't do drugs, but I will voice my opinion in the streets and once the RIAA makes CD prices reasonable and stops raping the artists so much, I'll buy more CD's.

did any of you guys actually read the article

every website linking this story seems to make the erroneus connection between file sharing and terrorism, while the article does not really suggest such a link.

Witnesses and representatives at the U.S. House Judiciary Committee (news - web sites)'s Subcommittee on Courts, the Internet, and Intellectual Property hearing Thursday did express fears that profits from widespread copying of movies, music, and software outside the United States were being funneled into terrorist organizations, but the hearing produced no concrete examples of that happening.

John G. Malcolm, deputy assistant attorney general in the criminal division of the U.S. Department of Justice (news - web sites), did say there seems to be some connection between illegal copying and organized crime, in that many of the groups profiting from illegal copies are highly organized and can have international distribution networks. Organized crime often supports terrorism, he suggested.

they talk in particular about groups that profit from selling illegal files and software.

obviously there is no monetary exchange involved in file sharing.

whenever anything comes up about copyright every is quick to jump and blow things out of proportion.

obviously some statements like this do deserve ridiculeRepresentative John Carter, (R-Texas), suggested that college students would stop downloading if some were prosecuted and received sentences of 33 months or longer, like the defendants in the DOJ's Operation Buccaneer. "I think it'd be a good idea to go out and actually bust a couple of these college kids," Carter said. "If you want to see college kids duck and run, you let them read the papers and somebody's got a 33-month sentence in the federal penitentiary for downloading copyrighted materials."

but really guys....grow up.

do any of you actually support groups/individuals selling illegal copies of software, music, or movies?

I don't like the people who end up selling the stuff and making a profit on this. But IMO one of those idiot politicians is going to jump on this and make a huge issue out of it. It will start with those who sell it, which I have no objections to. Then it will be passed down to us:(

I can see where the article is coming from, but they aren't quite clear on things. The only people who make money off of pirated software are the people who sell it on the streets of China and such. Cracking groups, as well as people who trade software over the internet or give it out freely, don't make a dime off of it (in fact they're responsable for a large amout of CD burner sales:-D. Maybe past all the BS there are a few illegal software distribution groups that support terrorists, but certainly none in America.

Hell, I still look at cracking groups as role models. Here's an organised group of people who don't get any money from what they do, work day and night at times to crack and rip products and manage to most of the time get very high quality work done, get a bad image from th RIAA, the US government, and most of the "civilized" world, and they STILL keep going with pride. Now THAT'S dedication!

This type of bs is nothing new by these folks, the depths are just lower. Everyone know this award winning statement?
"The VCR is to the American film producer and the American public as the Boston Strangler is to the woman alone."

This nonsense is partly caused by whimpering angst over what did we do to cause terrorism.  Instead of putting the blame where it rightfully belongs-hate being preached, the rotten state of the Muslim world... folks got to feel guilty about crap.

How can file sharing fund terrorism? The sharing itself is free.

If there is a way of making money from sharing files I would sure like to know about it :D
