based on what? the "ultra" monikor has always denoted the highest of the high.
Based on Device ID distribution.

Seems to me that the more rumors I hear about AMD pushing for higher clocks on the R600, the more I wonder why it would need such a higher clock to begin with. Higher clocks mean more heat and power consumption.

No one knows specifically why they are pushing for such high clocks, but maybe they need to position the R600 at such a performance advantage from the G80 as to be able to withstand anything Nvidia releases to counter. But seeing as they probably have no idea what Nvidia's response will be, they are still at a disadvantage.

Nvidia's G81 which in all honesty is simply a Die shrink to 80 nm. We can expect it to have higher clocks from both memory and core/domains. There are a few G80 cards out now with a shader clockspeed of 1500+ mhz already. I'd guess the G81 could have an even higher shader clock. The r600 may have a memory bandwidth advantage with 512bit, but nvidia can increase the memory speeds to compensate. Also, there are rumors of the G81 having more stream shaders. That coupled with an increase in shader clockspeed could mean a good performance increase on the G81.

thats just crazy, as long as the disid is unique thats all that matters. its not an indication of performance.

Ya know even if the R600 is faster than the G81, it would have to be ALLOT faster to justify all those delays. I'm thinking around at least an overall performance increase of 15% or more because if it isn't just a monster, then why trust ATi since they blew a product cycle? Only AMD can fix this, and the R600 is pretty much out of there hands since it was nearly finished when AMD obtained ATi. I think this will probably happen but if ATi delays the card again, I think it will really hurt AMD/ATi more so than it has of all the delays combined so far. I think the G80 was much more powerful than ATi first thought. After all, the R600 was meant to compete against the G80 in the first place. Now since they've blown it, big time, they're competing against the G81.

If what Fuad said was true: http://www.fudzilla.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=68&Itemid=34
ATi is in BIG trouble. Just think...even if the G81 has the same 90nm die (which we know it doesn't) and Nvidia was somehow able to raise the core and memory speeds, this would pose a problem especially since they're having a hard time beating the G80 in everything! I think ATi bit off more than they chew and pretty soon, whether they like it or, they're gonna have to release the R600, lest they blow two product cycles in which case I'd imagine pretty much everyone responsible for the R600 design team would be fired.

Xion X2 posted this graph in another thread. As you can clearly see, the 8900GTX will destroy everything, including the pansy R600, for the next 5-6 years.

OMG that 8800GTX really sucks at FEAR.. :thumbdwn:

It's true, FEAR lags at 16XQ AA with 8800 GTX!

That may be true, but AMD needs to kick ATi in the butt to get them to release this thing. People might not want to believe it, but consumers need ATi and Nvidia. I personally don't have a preference for either company, only whose faster, but if one company lags behind like ATi, Nvidia might start to become complacent which affects their next card. I don't think that will be the case with the 8900 GTX, but if say the R600 was a complete disaster, it might affect the G90 as Nvidia might start to think they're untouchable and then ease off on R&D which would suck for us as we wouldn't be getting the best card from Nvidia we can get. I believe something like that happened with the NV30. Anyway we need both companies to be competitive to keep the industry on it's toes.
