GeForce 8800 Ultra

Saw this on Beyond3d.

The folks at VR-Zone have noticed that new ForceWare drivers are now sporting a reference to an "NVIDIA GeForce 8800 Ultra". This would appear to be the green team preparing to fight the appearance of AMD's upcoming R600 GPU. The more interesting question is what will its specifications be? Will it be a cherry-picked 90nm G80, with specs possibly a bit above some of the overclocked 8800s appearing in recent days from NVIDIA AIBs? Or will it be an 80nm optical shrink, and thus possibly a bit more aggressive?

Also, on the memory side, might GDDR4 finally make an appearance on NVIDIA SKUs in a bid to cut down on the expected bandwidth deficit vs the 512-bit bus R600? As for timing, it seems unlikely but not impossible that March would be the target, as reports around the web have reported that NVIDIA will not even be present in strength at CeBit, an obvious venue for such a launch. April or May would be more likely, and also fit with a bid to keep the performance crown out of R600's hands.

Wasn't the same **** going around when Nvidia launched the 7900GTX? Im willing to bet that the "Ultra" is nothing more then the GX2. You know what would be really funny, if Nvidia puts some of these device lists in the drivers inf to mess with people.

Do you remember 7900 Ultra showing up in any Forceware drivers? No's it's not the same ****. Of course Ultra could be a dual GPU card but I highly doubt it - why not just name it 8800GX2. Besides you guys are missing the most important point - G71 is vastly smaller and draws much less power than G80.

It is too early in the product life cycle. How many G70 based products did we have before the GX2 came out? Also there has to be a significant reduction in transistor size to eliminate heat/power probs.

Also, look at the state SLI Drivers are at in Vista. A Gx2 card would probably peform lower than an 8800GTS in Vista, at this point. Product suicide.

I doubt we will see a dual G80 card this year. It will be core clock and mem speed bump, IMO.

The Geforce 8950 GX2 is a dual-chip card based on a new 80 nanometre G80 chip, probably codenamed something else. Both GX2 GPUs are clocked at 550MHz and the difference is GDDR4. The card comes with 2x512MB of 256-bit GDDR4 memory clocked at 2000MHz. The card has 96 Shaders, per chip. It will be priced at $600.

Well if nvidia releases a GX2 part instead of a higher clocked part I am going to be pissed. We are getting close to DX10 games here real soon and if they prove to be faster in DX10 mode than in DX9 mode, then I can see gamers migrating over to the new OS rapidly. Would you buy a GX2 card to run in Vista with the current state of SLI performance?

Yes that's true, SLI performance is a big problem right now. The have to improve the SLI situation drastically. If nV really plans to release a product like the GX2 in the next few months, we can expect improved SLI performance even sooner ;)

Well the 7800GTX 512mb GPU had a "U" at the end of it which could mean it was intended to be a 7800 Ultra

If i recall the R600 has 512Bit external memory and 1Gbit ring bus. As the 8800GTX is already pushing GDDR3 to it's max with the 8800GTX then yes it will have to be GDDR4.

Seems more like g81/8900 specs to me. If its just a g80, I dont see how they could reach 700-800MHz on the core w/ most of th GTX chips topping out at 650MHz. I would love to see 800MHz tho :D .

I'm not really sure about that, it doesn't make much sense because most of the superclocked cards are already that fast, and the evga KO is 648 / 2000. That wouldn't even be an upgrade for a lot of people, since I can already hit 648 / 2000 on a regular 8800gtx.

Well all the 5900/5900U/5950U , teh 6800GT/U & the 7800GTX(256)/7800GTX(512)/7900GTX were not much more than overclocked versions of their lesser brothers. maybe only the 7800->7900 & thus the change from "8" to "9" , but since we are talking about a 8800GTX ---> 8800U then i wont expect much esp with no competition out there from ATi.

Any rumors or plans on a release date? Im going to upgrade next week... but if things are expected to come out soon... I will wait.
