I have my PC hooked to my HDTV from the PCs DVI-D port to the TVs HDMI port. Everything works as it should and downloaded HD videos play and look great. Now all I need to do is find a way to upscale DVDs. There must be a way. Anybody have any ideas???

AFAIK, it's pretty much automatic on a PC when you're using a digital connection. The graphics card has an internal scaler and automatically upscales any DVD you play to whatever your desktop resolution is. Nothing special is required.

Well, I tried it and it sure looks like you're right. WMP11 won't play the DVD's on the HDTV. I get some message about it can't upscale protected content. But WinDVD plays it just fine and the DVD's look great at 720p.

have you looked into FFDSHOW?

I have and it seems way to complicated to me. Besides, it really does appear that the DVDs are being upscaled when i move the WinDVD window from my 15" HP LCD to my 37" HDTV LCD.

HAHA I know what you mean...

Well obviously they will be scaled somehow, but I think FFDSHOW has superior processing of the scaling.

That is way too much work.

Sorry but theres no click click program that will do all that, just do it step by step and you'll be fine.

I agree with JamesDax. It's way too much work just to get upscaled DVD output through FFDShow when other applications do it without all the configuration contorsions. It's not as if FFDShow produces a massively better picture for all the effort you have to put into it.

If you read that thread, thats exactly what it does. It makes image quality better.
Upscaling is done automatically when you maximize the dvd on a pc monitor or a 1080p tv, if you want it to look sharper and better you go to that thread and do what they say.

Erm, I'm speaking from experience. I've used FFDShow (and I read and post at AVSForum as well) and I don't think the effort involved in setting it up is worthwhile because the PQ, imo, is not massively better. ymmv.

I'm perfectly happy with the quality of the upscaling I get by simply moving the video image onto the HDTV.

See I could never do that. If I knew there was a way to improve the PQ of anything that I have I would do it no matter how much work it takes.
Guess I care about my movies and electronics just that much more than your typical J6P.

Some people wash their hands 30 or 40 times a day too because they care about clean hands just that much more than the typical J6P. I simply avoid pissing on them in the first place.

Ah what a terrible analogy.
Next you'll be telling me you stick with RF adapters for all your equipment because the benefits of something like component video or HDMI aren't worth the extra work.

Another terrible analogy. Replacing one cable for another requires almost no extra work.
Anyway, I've gone over that ffdshow user guide a couple of times and that thing is a mess. One of the worst and unfriendly user guides I've ever seen.

What extra work? If I have the choice I'll use HDMI because it's a single plug. It actually simplifies the process of getting better PQ. Using FFDShow does not simplify things. It's a convoluted mess.
Maybe my problem is that part of my job involves writing technical documenation for commerical Audio-Video systems? Here's a pic of just the amp cabinets (the processing equipment - bin loops, DSPs, audio routers, controllers, etc. - are in a seperate row of cabinets) for a project I worked on recently:

I get enough A/V complexity on the job. I don't need it at home too. Using FFDShow is way too much like work.

It just so happens that I don't mind extra work if it gets me something better.
