View Full Version : Vista's activation is really irritating!

Vista's activation is really starting to get on my nerves. The copy I had activated on my 2nd computer just seemed to expire for some reason today. I tried to login, it took a while and then I get a dialog saying the I needed to activate (I already had activated it a long while back). When I tried that, it tells me my product ID is already in use. On my other system, I couldn't activate it either b/c I initialy activated it on a hard drive that I then replaced with a larger hard drive. So, it's in the 30-day trial mode. I'll probably let it expire though and deal with it then since I'm now back to using XP on that system. This is pretty ridiculous though. I was fine with XP's method of having to eventually call them after several activations but geez, having to deal with this already is poor at best.

Now there's a hint for ya...HAR HAR HAR er... YARRR!!!! (lee63)

I agree activation can be stupid silly, I once called MS to re-up my x64 XP and I got India and it took about 10x longer to simply understand the code the lady was giving me.

well, updated my BIOS once and had to reactivate too, but I remembered I installed a patch from MS to stay activated even after a BIOS-update, so the patch didn't work I guess ????

Hmmm, I've updated my BIOS several times with no activation warning.

Strange, I had to phone to MS to get another "group of numbers"

I've had to call M$ many times regarding activation (all for WinXP) and everytime except once I've gotten india. It takes like 5 tries to get the code right. The one time I got an english speaking person, it was amazing.

I got a guy from India but he was pretty easy to understand. Strangely, they didn't even ask for any reason or anything like that. They just gave me the new number to enter.

Edit: Actually, I bet I know what happened. I just noticed this when looking at the updates that have been installed. I recently installed the Nvidia SATA drivers that appeared on Windows update. I wonder if that somehow triggered the need to activate again since some have said activation is now tied to the hard drive.

activation ,not tied to hdd but motherboard. If you change several major components at once this will also require a re-activation.
I put some raptors in my pc and installed another vista on them, clicked on "activate", job done (vista 64 hp oem).

I've changed video and sound card with no activation warning. Then went to change my HD and had to call in(not all on the same day btw)

It's a sad day when you have to crack something you paid for because the activation is defunct. Does WGA see your copy as pirated too?
