View Full Version : Blocking web sites
Hi all,
Short version - Myspace needs to die.
Is adding entries to the windows host file sufficient, or am I better off with a 3rd party filtering software?
Thanks in advance for suggestions!
if you have a router you can just block it there. setup allows you to block entire domains, keywords etc

If your router allows you to enter a route just create a local route to 127.0.0.1 for the following netblock:
216.178.38.0/24
Or just block that netblock.
Thanks guys, I'll be grabbing a router within a week or so, that's what I'll go with then.

Get a Buffalo WHR-5G4S and put OpenWRT on it with the webif^2:
http://www.openwrt.org

This is what I run, it's amazing.

Oh yeah, for what it's worth, I block MySpace too.

Well, my only alternative would land me in jail. :) Not really, My wife would like to be able to just use the computer without fear of trojans, keyloggers, spyware etc, and the girls are physically unable to hear the words "Do not go to that website."
LoL, If this doesn't work they lose their internet connection altogether and wifey can surf wherever she likes on a new (to us) laptop.
Oh yeah, thanks for the links! Looking into it now.

Build out a server and setup Dans Guarding with SQUID, and create an iptables redirect rule to proxy all outbound http/https traffic to it. You can also block other social networks.
What I'll do when the toddler gets old enough to surf is redirect all traffic through SQUID and use PAM auth so each user has their own account. The baby will have a default deny-all and only explicit allow on certain sites like Disney, Nickelodeon, etc.
Server is exactly what I was eyeballing. I'm putting a newer rig together for them, bring them up into the a64 world, and I was going to run devil-linux (http://www.devil-linux.org/home/index.php) as a firewall.
I haven't read up to much on it other than just the general info, but as they're expanding it from just a firewall, it could fit the bill for regular server duty as well.
Of course Ubuntu with any fat trimmed off could do it too. :) This would be my best course of action really, no cash output needed.
And I get to scale another learning curve.
Crap - late getting back to work - see what happens when I screw around? LOL

Marketing joke, a "Gaming Router"? Right...
I almost peed my pants, "GameFuel™ Priority powered platform reduces latency and boosts network efficiency and performance". Why not just call it QoS/ToS and that they're prio TCP packets less than 64K, TCP ACK, and UDP.
Just get a BHR-G54S and put OpenWRT on it, it'll do real QoS if you want to do it; I do.

My fiancee has 2 girls, and when we get married, I'm putting in a server. I will block sites like that, and I will also monitor their IM's they get. One of the perks of being an IT Admin. ;)
I never heard of a gaming router before :) , But I am at a disadvantage here because getting something like this set up is all new to me, and I didn't want to put my foot down with these girls because they're step-daughters, I didn't want to cross that line.
Normally they're good with watching what they are into, not these past couple of months though.
Time to cross the line.

I'd be more than happy to help you out with content filtering/etc. I think you have my IM. I'd cross the line, if they're under your roof they're under your discipline; your wife had better back you on this one.

Thanks. I'll admit I've never had step-kids but if I did I would treat them exactly as my own and they would be subject to my discipline. Just as I would love them I would discipline them as it is my responsibility to ensure they are raised correctly if they live in my house.
If my wife didn't support me in that I'd not have married her. Not slamming you one bit grey-1, just merely expressing my opinion and how I'd handle things.

Thanks for the offer, I'll take you up on it as soon as the equipment is together. And the wife is very behind this, she hates it as much as I do, she just has a much longer fuse than I. ;)
I'll pm you for your IM soon as I'm ready. I had yours and a few other written down and can't find it.
Thanks again man.

Not taken as a slam at all man. I do set and enforce all the rules under most circumstances. Long story short, my wifes ex used to abuse her badly, as a result the girls think they can get what they want from her, they know they can't from me.
Well, after being together for several years (7 soon:D ) and a lot of talks, she understands she doesn't have to fear me, the girls, anyone as long as I'm around and has begun putting her foot down with them. I stand back so she can make them understand she means what she says. She has really needed to re-assert her authority with them. And God Bless her, she has.
On rare occasions though, like this one, I still take matters back.

You're a good guy, I'll gladly do what I can to keep your family from becoming a bunch of emo camwhores. I hate myspace.
Let me know what hardware you throw together.

Admit it, you're a gamer, you bought it because it was "designed for gamers!11!11oneoneone".

I bought one but not because of the "gaming" features. I got it for the fact that it's a gigabit router. Cheapest one I could get in my neck of the woods. And it works great. It's way better than my old dlink router was.
