Hi, i ran to the store and picked up Vista Ultimate today. I have it installed and havent had a single problem yet. Until I ran 3dmark....
I scored ~6500 in XP
Vista score: 3000 flat.
Using 100.65 drivers off on nv website. Something im missing here? Help my games run like poo.

Yeah but everyone else is reporting their scores are about the same in Vista now as they were in XP. Something is wrong here. Definetely something wrong.
Im not even using a 8800 series card. :(

I just did some googling and listen to this bull****.
I open up CPU-Z, go to the mainboard tab, and my freakin PCIe link width is 1x. Thats right, my card is running at 1x instead of 16x. Anyone have any ideas on how to fix this? How the heck would isntalling Vista change my link width. This is weird. At least I know why its running so damn slow.

only 2 gigs of ram and you want to run vista? haven't you heard?
4gigs of ram is the "sweet spot". i didn't think it was a big deal but vista orgasms over 4 gigs of ram. helped my gaming performance big time.

ya.. this IS about games.. notice how i said game performance. Vista will gladly use 1gig of ram for itself without your permission.. so my statement still stands. 4gigs.. you'll probibly fix a lot of issues.
I have 4 gigs but Vista snatches 1gig for itself instantly when it gets turned on. but then my programs/games have 3gigs for themselves. and WOW what a difference. RAM does matter in vista.

Problem fixed. It's a mix of issues really. One is just an inherent issue with the P965 chipset sometimes locking to 1x. Also seems the NB vcore has something to do with it. I also attribute it partly to the new 1004 BIOS, it's pretty buggy at this point. I might roll back, we'll see.
Now scoring ~64xx in 06, right where I shuld be.

If you read the thread, you'll see that the reason my performance was so ass is because the PCIe link was stuck at 1x. But maybe when I can afford it I'll throw in another 2gb.
Other than this problem I have to say my experience with Vista has been very positive so far.

coo, glad you worked it out. but ya, the ram purchase is a nice edition since Vista uses every little bit of it.

4gb just sounds sexy too :p
Plus I cant imagine how sweet a bank of all black Ballistix tracers with LEDs would look inside my case... Too bad another 2gb is $325. :(
And if I had 4gb, id need to use 64bit which I dont think im prepared to do just yet.

ah yes, forgot you have 32bit. my bad :(
ya.. pc price keeps growing.. but there is only 2 more things i want for me to be fully happy with my pc.
1) Widescreen monitor.
2) Geforce 8950 GX2
Thankfully it will only cost 1grand more. I think ive already spent about 3grand...

All I want now is a new PSU, case, and maybe a new cooler cuz the base on my Zalman isnt perfectly flat and it gives me crappy temps. :(
I've never been as happy with my PC as I am now :)

If you have less than 4gb it seems Vista just uses half for itself and for caching and then just makes room if a paticular program needs more. I have 512mb of ram on my laptop and Vista uses about 300mb of it and runs fine. My mom's laptop has 1gb and it uses about 512mb and still runs fine. I have 2gb and it uses about 1gb and runs fine on there too.
But anyway here's an article about 4gb being Vista's sweet spot: http://www.computerworld.com/action/article.do?command=viewArticleBasic&articleId=9011523
If you search for "4gb vista memory" there's a bunch of other's on google. Though they're probably all just quoting each other.

sigh.....
Vista Premium install on a system with 2048MB DDR2 uses 550MB on startup after non-essential startup items are removed, this is including a virus scan ( AVG ).
Of course 4GB is sweet hell I've got 8 installed in mine although I refuse to run Vista. 2GB though is perfectly fine for Vista. Wait till games like BioShock, Crysis and Unreal Tournament 3 are released, you may want to look into getting more then 2GB then.

Just thought I'd update you guys on whats going on. So far I have CS:S, HL2 ep 1, quake 4 and BF2142 installed. The only one i havent tried yet is 2142. Quake 4 and CS:S run perfectly. HL2 ep1 runs doggedly slow, I mean 30 fps where before i was getting 70fps. :(
Using the new beta drivers. 101.41 or something.

BF2142 crashes to desktop for me so far with every driver on Vista. Microsoft will release a Vista patch for this issue I'm sure in the near future since reading the latest patch notes for Vista, BF2 was JUST fixed as far as compatiblity goes.

Strange, no problems at all here with BF2142, just a clicking sound (like hovering over buttons in the menu) when looking around in the game

HL2 episode 1 seems to just have fixed itself. Runs better than XP now. So far all my games actually run better under Vista! :captnkill:

ya, ive had 2 vista ultimate guys tell me no probs... WTH! guess i should buy ultimate when i go to buy retail release rather than OEM.
could be a very small thing that im overlooking too.. but i really could use a better driver for my 7950gx2.. SLI is still way to buggy..

Yeah it seems 7950GX2 owners and 8800 owners are kinda up the creek right now. I trust nvidia to fix it though, they've always pulled through in the past. That being said my 7900's been working just fine in games.

Just what might those non-essential items be? Does Vista run any faster with them off?

I'm not talking about Service tweaks yet, I'm talking about startup items and few minor options like UAC etc etc.
Last time I setup vista the max memory I used on startup was 550MB.
There are service tweaks that you can do, its not the same as XP. Last time I tried it the system crashed. Just look for common things like Security Center, Error reporting etc etc, things like that are useless and save up on memory. Wait till someone releases a service list like the old Black Viper site, you can probably drop down to 320MB on startup easily.
