XP does need a good defrag. The built in one is good enough, honestly, but I'm sure that you'll have 50 recommendations in before you know it. ;)

The reason I ask is because I have tried the built in one but this one computer is still sluggish. Now I have already checked for spyware and virusses ... nothing. I've msconfig and deactivated some clutter. But our secretary's PC hasn't been formatted ever since 4-5 years ago.

I would be surprised if the remaining "sluggishness" is due to fragmentation. Have you tried crap cleaner (ccleaner) yet?

Clay recommended dirms (http://www.dirms.com/) to me earlier, but I couldn't get it to work in Vista. Looks simple, sleek and sounds pretty powerful.

If you try it let us know what you think.

I read somewhere that if you keep all your data on the outer edge of the disk platter then read/write speed increases about 25%. Itmakes sense when I think about it, but has anyone confirmed truth to this? And do any of those defrag programs allow to select where you move the files? XP's defrag does not, I dont think...

The best defragmenter out there is Contig

Download it here.

http://www.snapfiles.com/get/contig.html

You can use the PowerDefragmenter GUI to make it easier to run Contig.

Download the GUI here.

http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/Hard-Disk-Utils/Power-Defragmenter.shtml

Simply unzip them into the same folder, then run Powerdefrag.

It's the best one I've found

I use Auslogics Disk Defrag. Free defragmentor, works in vista and is fast as hell.

Thanks for the info, it looks impressive for free. Here's a link (http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag/) for anyone interested.

Thanks for the heads up on Auslogics, I'll try this one too.

Is there any way to reliably "benchmark" a defragger? Not for speed, but for overall effectiveness?
