Hmmmm...and what's this about retail for $1000.
We shall see I guess.:D
$1000. They must be joking. I cant see many people buying one for that price. Its the inquirer anyway so i'll take it with a pinch of salt.

Yeah, it's ludicrous. I doubt that the 8800 "ultra" will have an MSRP that high. I could see a GX2 rev going for $700-800 though.
The Inquirer article says, "Given that not even the most demanding Vista games on the market today even come close to taxing an 8800 GTX, just how fast is fast enough?"
These guys must not play games on a PC. Stalker and ArmA are the most recent titles I've picked up and both of these can make an 8800 GTX show its limits on an average machine. There is no such thing as fast enough.

Maybe they're playing at 1024x768 w/0xAA and 0xAF in 8-bit color

That's more of a software, than a hardware, limitation. If Nvidia would release a new driver more often than every 2-3 months, performance would be much better on a single GTX.
There are games out there that look better than Stalker and run better than it does, by the way.

Well there are no games that use that much real time and soft shadows in an outdoor environment where everything casts a shadow. People tried to do that with the Doom 3 engine and it used hard shadows and outdoors was really laggy.
That is why on static lighting STALKER runs like butter.

Oblivion has a lot of soft shadows in it, and it never dips below 30fps on a single GTX w/ 16xAA enabled.
It also looks better than Stalker does.

Oblivion definitely doesn't have as much lighting as Stalker does.
If I remember right, there was speculation that the 8800GTX was going to be $1000. I'm guessing theinq will estimate(or hear a rumor) that every new top of the line card from here on out will be $1000. That really is a terrible site.
Well supposedly these are the upcoming specs:
* GeForce 8950 GX 2-> two chips g80 on one card, 2 X 96 stream processors, 2 X 320- bit memory system bus , 2 X 640 mb. memory of type GDDR-4, frequency 575/2000 MHz, the frequency of shader domain is 1700 MHz, recommended retail price $649;
* GeForce 8800 Ultra - > 128 stream processors, 384- bit memory system bus , 768 mb memory of type GDDR-4, frequency 650/2200 MHz, the frequency of shader domain 1800 MHz, recommended retail price $549.

Also, the $999 may be the price rumor may be in singapore dollars, which would be 657.929 USD at the current rate.

They must be pretty confident in SLI performance under Vista if they hope to reach 50% increase w/ the 8950GX2 over the 8800GTX...

Hmm not enough to be worth waiting for says I , you can already buy pre-clocked 8800GTX cards at 630/2000, to warrant calling it an ultra and be worth holding out for, I would want 700 core.
Am I alone in thinking thats a bit too little of core increase ?

Well I am sure there will be OC versions of the "ultra" too... Maybe not at launch, but a couple months down the road.
Also, what are those overclocked cards shader cores running at?

Psshhh !!!
