I bought a bfg 8800gts 340meg oc2 video card last week, The card runs great but it idles at 86 celsius and after playing a game like stalker for a couple of hours it goes over 100 celsius. I e-mailed tech support and also called tech support and got two different answers one guy said the card is running too hot and I should rma it the other guy said it is fine. What would you all do ? I really dont want to waste the time and be without a video card for a few weeks if I rma it but on the other hand I dont want the card to fail down the road if I don't get it re-placed.

Over a 100c?? When I overclock my card to 650/900 I never hit 80c while gaming. The max I think was 75c after a lot of Oblivion. Normally I don't even hit 70c.

But first, do you got air flow to the video card? Is the fan working properly?

If so I would rma it.

See, this kinda stuff is why I label "tech-support" at these places useless. They equip some poor schmo with a headset who doesn't know a thing about computers for you to talk to, and he misguides people on such a ridiculous level as this. 100C is way too freaking hot for a videocard to be running for an extended period of time. Especially one that costs that kind of money.

RMA that card before it does this:

RMA if it goes beyond 100c.

takovr, what tool are u using to read the temp? Openup your case and do a reality check on the preceived heat output from the video card.

if it's 340MB it may be a counterfeit and that would expain the high temps.

Yeah, I know that's unheard of, but there could exist counterfeit cards out, that could be a new negative trend.

Do you have fans in that case? :p

I peak load @ 75C playing "Oblivion" with this GTX. If you are sure you are getting decent air flow I'd RMA that thing ASAP. No way it should be that hot.
