I thought a similar thread to this had been posted already? Guess the 5 HD DVD giveaway wasn't enough marketing promotion to get the Toshiba Players rolling ...

Now that Blu-Ray is becoming more popular it seems.
More likely that Toshiba knows $500 is more than most are willing to pay for a DVD player and that in order to get customers, you need to sell your stuff cheaper.

HD-DVD is on its way out. I dont think anything can save that thing. They should have taken a hit and included it in the Xbox2. 10 million would have had it now. What a missed opportunity.

Sony made the poor choice by putting Blu-Ray in PS3. I also found humorous their claims of "the war is over!!", it was similar to how they said the PS3 has "4D Graphics". This XMAS, a PS3 will cost $600 and a standalone HD DVD player will cost $200 at Walmart. Which would you buy if you wanted to play HD movies?
I think it was good choice putting blu-ray in the PS3 since it should help with blu-ray movie sales. Take me for example. I really had no plans to purchase hi-def movies until things were more settled but having the PS3, it was too hard to resist trying it out. That then led to buying the HD DVD addon since I wanted to be able to purchase any hi-def movie. I really don't see how getting a hi-def player in someone's home has a downside. It seems to me that it should help usher in the hi-def era, not hinder it.
[H] recently went over the format war in this article and they felt like it was a smart thing to include the blu-ray player in the PS3 as well.

Another site tracking amazon sales is http://www.eproductwars.com/dvd/ (currently being updated though). With a bunch of releases on blu-ray earlier, blu-ray was leading in all the categories but now with HD DVD releasing a bunch of popular releases, they were starting to lead in the categories. They really just seem to go back and forth depending on what is being released and how many releases are available.

The prob I see is that while its a good idea for the hardcore gamers + techheads, what average family is going to spend $600 on a videogame console. PS3 may do a lot of things but in the end it will be considered a videogame console by the average family in the US. So, while it may be adopted by gamers and tech heads, the average family may very well pass on the PS3 for the cheaper Wii and 360 - especially when 360 offers a bigger library with thus far the same or superior graphics in most cases. While hardcore gamers make up a portion of the sales, they dont make up the bulk of them in the long run.

For those who already have a G8x NVIDIA card in their system, PowerDVD Ultra and a 360 HD-DVD player provides a picture that equals any HD-DVD player you can buy and it's cheaper than 500-some bucks.
Now I'm just waiting for an internal, SATA-based HD-DVD player so I can get rid of the 360 HD-DVD. It's an ugly beasty.

Except it can be a huge bitch to get working thanks to HDCP.
And I highly doubt it's cheaper than a stand-alone HD DVD player...
8500 GT = $150
PowerDVD Ultra = $100
360 HD DVD drive = $200
(that's $450 already, not including the monitor you'd need...and PowerDVD still doesn't properly scale 1080p to 720p)
HD-A2: $310
You don't need the XA2. It's just the BEST HD DVD/SD DVD player on the market.
