Hi all, i'm new here and looking for advice?

I've got an AMD 4000+ CPU on an ASUS Premium board with 2Gb of RAM.

I was looking for real world experiences of going from a 7800 GTX 256Mb to a 8800 GTS 640Mb on this kind of rig?

Do you think it's worth the effort?

Mostly been pressured due to the way STALKER hammers my frame rates. I was good in all other games. Not gone Vista yet but this is a consideration too.

cheers

It will make a big diffrence, even more in game like GRAW where for high details needs 512MB of ram :) Although i did got from SLIed 7800GTX cards to a 8800GTX it was a big diffrence. Going from 1 7800GTX to a 8800GTS should also be.

cheers Dazz.

Forgot to say I play at 1400 x 1050 on a 20" Samsung so that's the resolution I'm looking at.....

I just made the same upgrade as Dazz. I went from 7800GTX's in SLi to a single 8800GTX and I see big differences in everything I play.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. made my 7800's cry. It was running so poorly infact I was getting disintrested in the game :eek: My 8800GTX runs the game quite well. I'm running it at 1680x1050 and ourdoors it smooth as butter now.

I would expect that the jump from a single 7800GTX would probably be more impressive than my jump from dual 7800's to an 8800GTX.

well you all convinced me :)

went for this in the end

it's overclocked so hopefully it'll be up to it. Wanted to go GTX but couldn't stretch :(

I'll let you know how it fares once I get the beauty

cheers

You guys were getting poor performance with SLI'd 7800's??

Ouch..

No doubt Stalker runs great on the 8800's.. but on my gf's computer
(my old one) Stalker runs absolutely amazing, in fact just about the same
as on my computer, and the only difference is she's running 1024x768, while
I'm at 1280x1024. Perhaps it's more to do with how you optimize your system
than just relying on pure hardware.

My computer;
680i motherboard
Core 2 Duo E6600
Geforce 8800 GTS 320MB
2Gb OCZ Ram
Windows Xp

Hers;
Nforce3 Ultra motherboard
AMD x2 4200+ (Socket 939)
1.5 Gb Dual Channel Ram
Geforce 7800 GS AGP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!256 ram
Windows Xp

I'd have to say that 1680x1050 is a huge difference compared to your GF running it at 1024x768. Also, are her settings maxed or at stock? I had adjusted my setting a bit, mainly bumped my textures up. I believe at the lower resolutions, 7 and 8 series cards are close in performance.

WasStoNed, congrats on your 8800GTS. You're gonna love it! :D

I went from SLid 7800GTs to the single OC gts 640. I always game at 1920x1200 or 1680x1050.

Haven't looked back once. :)

Going to the GTX directly would've blown you away :D .. the GTS is still pretty fast compared to your 7800. i'm sure you'll enjoy it for quite a while at the said resolution.

WOW, I know it's not a precise score but I tried to follow the same route in STALKER

with 7800GTX certain settings nobbled;

2007-04-03 15:49:11 - XR_3DA
Frames: 1427 - Time: 64450ms - Avg: 22.141 - Min: 8 - Max: 29

with 8800 GTS 640Mb same settings;

2007-04-03 16:37:03 - XR_3DA
Frames: 2590 - Time: 70904ms - Avg: 36.528 - Min: 12 - Max: 47

with 8800 GTS 640Mb ALL settings maxed at 1400x1050;
2007-04-03 16:40:40 - XR_3DA
Frames: 1999 - Time: 64510ms - Avg: 30.987 - Min: 8 - Max: 39

I can cope with the last one for all the eye candy!!!!!!

SOOOOOO glad I did it!!! :)

Another reason to get the GTS 640 is the much improved AF quality. It has the best currently on the market. It also has much more efficient AA @ higher quality settings like 8x and 16x.

As other have said, in shader heavy games like "Oblivion" you will really notice it. You will be able to use HDR + AA in that title as well. The G80 is capable of it.

I replayed "Oblivion" and "TRL" as soon as I got my 8800GTX and it was a day and night difference. It did much better than a 7950 GX2 or X1900 XTX Crossfire in said titles and looked better to boot.

Did the same upgrade and i can see an incredible difference.
I play at 1920x1200 though wich is where the x1900 showed it's age wheras the GTS is screaming fast.

In highres the GTS blows the x1900 out of the water.

I am very satisfied with the card. It's also running inaudible at 600/2000 (more possible) without overheating. Best stock cooling solution i've seen so far.

The x1900 i had had to be watercooled. It was just that loud. :thumbdwn:
Was an amazing card too though until i got the 24 incher.

I went from 2 7800 gtx's in SLI to 1 8800GTX back in december and it was a great move. It's alot faster than what I had before in all games I play. Oh and I always run 1920x1200 res and its simply amazing. I love this card. :)

Oh and did I mention no SLI BS issues to deal with? In case I didn't, let me say it again, hehe. Games work and run great first time I install em and set the setting how I like. Its gaming bliss. (nana2) Untill I build a new Penryn rig this summer that is. :P
