Yup, it's time to screw this ATI/nVidia crap for a while and clean out me brain with a little retro action. I've always wanted to see what 3dfx was all about, and I figure this is as close as I'll ever get.

I figure it'll be a fun diversion/brainsoap for me, along with a hell of a gaming card for a select group of games....

...which brings up a good question: what games would you recomend that would play extry well on the V5 5500? On a Tuly1.4@1.75, 512MB, FortissimoII, win98se/XP rig?

It might just be a poor man's excuse for some geek time, but I'm actually excited at the idea of getting this to play with and see what the what is for me own self. :D

Just got word that it's shipping out this afternoon, I can't wait!

I'll try all the suggestions, I'm now really looking forward to seeing what SoF (not SoF2, the original) looks/plays like on it. :D

If you're running Windows 98, don't forget Need for Speed II (SE only supported Glide), 3, High Stakes and Porsche Unleashed. Carmageddon 2 is another excellent choice for Windows 9x. Actually, one of the first games I played when I got my Voodoo Banshee was C2 and boy did it run superbly. :D

Make sure to download the most recent 3dfx mini-gl driver for games like Half-Life (and there's a whole bunch more, too). It will run so much better than the standard 3dfx OpenGL driver.

There's some Glide Rally game (I think Pro Rally 2000?) I can't remember the name of, and Rune. The Rally game was one of the best I've played, yet it didn't allow multiple cars on same track. The tracks were awesome though!

I bought the Voodoo 5 back when it first came out and was scarce... worst purchase of a video card I ever made!

I would say the same thing about my Voodoo 4. That card was slow and ugly. I reverted back to my then Voodoo 3 immediately.

I think unreal was optimised for it too.

V4 is superior to the V3 in the facts of Mult-itexturing rates, 32-bit rendering, & in texture size. (2048x2048 vs 256x256), not to mention the FSAA.

That V5 scales to CPU's real well (to about 1.5Ghz, some say about 2Ghz, but it's bs.), and that Fortissemo wont help cuz of the fact it does alot of 3d-sound in software anyway.
Head over the www.tdhq.net, they have updated drivers. Updated D3D, Glide & OGL.

Yes, that is the best point of the V5, the FSAA. It's still superior to this day... But I sold mine awhile back for about $40. (Got my GF4 for $90 on sale @ best buy. Basicly $50 for the GF4 outta my pocket since I got the V5 as a gift, lol)

the card deserves the appreciation, sure, but the level shown in the link... well... ... um... better than a ti4600???

... Glide guys really dig their voodoo's.

... I have a Voodoo1... a lil' piece o history. :)

Thanks for the review linkage, I like the fanboy ones now that it's on it's way. ;)

As for it being better than a ti4600....NOT!

Heck, I expect me GF3 is gonna game most stuff a lot better than it...I just wanna play with some voodoo fun. :)

Depends, if your ONLY talking about AA quality then its no contest as the GF4 looses in a big way. However Spead, Features, AF, ect all go for the GF4 :)

Sweet deal on both! But I thought $50 to check out the FSAA-from-hell that everyone is raving about would be worth it, especially in light of the whole IQ debate going on....everyone seems to be using 3dfx's FSAA as the golden standard and I just want to see what the heck their all so hyped about. :)

It was sent yesterday by 2-3 day USPS.....it might just be here by the weekend! :D

The AA wasn't noticeably better than that on the GF4 "if" it was. It also hardly made up for the washed out textures the V5 produced. Funny that 3dfx'rs argued about "my" settings, yet the comparison samples of their fsaa on their websites showed the huge difference in texture clarity.

Hey one thing, do make sure you use the 3dhq drivers tho. That is SO important if you want alot of FSAA performance.

In the latest builds, they implemented SSE support & 'improved' (not exactly how) the 2x to /almost/ look like 4x.

(Another thing, the form of FSAA, (RGSS, I believe), also anti-alias's textures, which is why it's comparable to pics w/ AF.
4xFSAA on the V5 (RGSS), is just as equal as about 6xFSAA & 2xAF on the Radeon9700 (RGMS)

(Now, I always seem to get the ones reversed. I think I'm right this time. THe one the V5 uses is still superior to the version of the R300. (It's a super-sampling & multi-sampling differences.))

You sure they didn't make 4x just look like 2x? ;)

Because it gets frikkin' annoying after about 2 minutes. Play GTA3 with motion blur on for any length of time and then tell us how "uber" it is.
