View Full Version : Barcelona Issues?
Currently issues with:
1. Memory controller - Re-spin supposed to/supposedly made things better.
2. New Hyper-transport Bus - Re-spin supposed to/supposedly made things better.
These issues == why there has been a delay apparently.
Marchitecture == ace.
Issue == the pants.
That is all.

Rumore then?
Look, I'm only trying to find out how you know this. Did you read it in an article? Is it from an even "higher" source? Or are you even allowed to say?
Other wise, we might as well just assume that you are making it up merely cause it "makes sense and just sounds right". ;)
But, you seem honest enough- guess we have no reason to not take your word for it. :)

Once all items are released and all pertinent NDA's are lifted, we can revisit.
Suffice to say I am eagerly awaiting Barcelona and the delays and reasons for it are not helping my confidence any.
It's a good thing there are so many positives in the marchitecture but... Penryn and Nehalem are almost ready to sample
Very vwery vwery interesting..... ;)

AMD is in a tough spot right now...
Thanks for the info.

So I guess I will just take your word for it then.
I've pretty much decided that I'm not gonna' build a new rig till atleast year's end. By then AMD's new architecture should be out, and Intel should have their new stuff out as well. Seems to be the best idea for me so far. Heck, I was blown away at how fast my Opty185 is, when that rig was running. :(
Okay, Sazar, since you seem to be in the know about this- do you think that Barcelona will put AMD in the performance lead again? I guess I'm just asking for your personal opinion based on the information that is available to you.

I'm about to get the A64 6000 Chip, and that's going to be my last CPU upgrade for awhile. If AMD is going to put something out at the end of the year, that will be right inline for my next upgrade.

No comparative benches conducted yet so I don't think anyone but internal techs from AMD can comment.
All I WILL say is, based on the marchitecture details as well as the scans posted on AT (love those naked pics of the interconnects and general layout), that THEORETICALLY, Barcelona will be a beast.
Now, how well AMD can optimize the general design and how well they can work out the kinks is going to play a gigantic part in my deciding to skip Barcelona's 4 core procs and go with Penryn/Nehalem based procs, or not.
This is speculation, I don't believe anyone has any penryn or nehalem samples, yet  But a native mem-controller along with an evolutionary upgrade to the general design would be ace.
Gotta love Intel/Israel and their designs

sweet. THANKS :D
i hope it beats C2D. cant wait to see the **** it stirs up if it does hahaha.
I would expect it to beat c2d based simply on the marchitecture. After-all, it was clear that sledge/claw hammer tech was superior to the netburst architecture that intel was employing.
However, c2d has the advantage of greater efficiency and there is a huge difference in thermal dissipation in this generation as well as a MUCH more efficient architecture from Intel.
Like I said, the Intel/Israel team deserves a friggin medal, along with a gift of sharks with friggin laser beams (to aid in marchitecture design of course).
Even if baloney is faster by a hair,Intel will smother it in a few clock speed increases with C2D,and Penryn mixed with a small but healthy dose of clock speed boosts will poo poo all over baloney marchitecture. :D

After all that you've dumped into your rig you'd really hate to see AMD take back the crown, wouldn't you? :p

I agree, Barcelona should "theoretically" wipe the floor on a work per clock cycle basis, it has a more advanced memory controller than conroe or kentsfield. Intel is currently operating on more of a statistical basis than with a true prediction matrix. Amd has made some excellent progress in this field, as well as variable core/memory controller voltages.
Unfortunately it's all just speculation right now.
Please keep us up to date, when you get some good info or the NDA ceases to be in effect.
Thanks,
JC

Won't happen, Remember the old Netburst days.....come on I know you do. Intel chips just couldn't compete...for nigh on 3 years. All of a sudden Intel hits one and I mean 1 outta the park and some people immediately write Amd off. It's laughable. All things aside. I have no brand loyalty, so therefore, if I was to upgrade from my Opti right now; it would be an Intel Quad core that powered my system. Currently it's the best bang for the buck (quad FX is garbage). The thing we need to keep in mind in that no-one has seen a NATIVE QUAD CORE design in action, and we already know that AMD's on die memory controller has historically stomped the living piss outta Intel's NB based solution.
Instead of making outrages flaming remarks like "baloney" marchitecture. Why not sit back and wait for some acutal info, instead of preaching Intel like a fanboi.

Guys- remember that Barcelona will be SocketF and for Opterons only. For the desktop variants there will be a new core on a new socket- socket AM2+. That should follow shortly after Barcelona gets released. ;)

I can't understand why AMD / ATi doesn't release any of this tech if it kicks as much ass as some sites say. Some users over at Rage3D who have inside info claim the R600 is almost 70% faster than the 8800GTX in DX10 games, and similarily, other AMD users have reported that the Barcelona is faster than Kentsfield by about 1.5X times. My question is, if they are already this bleeding fast, why not release the dang things?

I believe this is more hype than anything else. I remember when the war was between Voodoo and nVidia, and they used to keep the rumors flying....
This is how I see it. When Intel was almost ready to launch Core Architecture based processors, they knows Netburst sucks, and so every single event was about the Core 2 Duos, even including benchmarks prior to launch as well, since Core 2 duos were faster.
Now AMD is in the same boat, Athlon64X2s are lagging behind, so why not release the benchies of almighty Barcelona earlier?? I'm guessing it's not what it's cracked up to be from all the rumors.
UNLESS they have something really special and want to keep Intel out of the loop, and surprise and totally surpass them. I don't really see that coming though considering the clock speed advantage Intel has atm.

Really?
What DX10 games did they use to benchmark?
