Hi, curious to know what the favourite combination of AA and AF is, or whether they're even used at all!

Searched for a similar poll and found nothing so here you go, a "what AA + AF do you prefer?" poll! hurrah! :)

If you vote, a post detailing prefered resolution at those settings would be cool too.. + what vid card you're using would be sweet!

Edit: Bah, 1st Poll and already making booboo's!

Edit #2: ok, all sorted now, thnx Volt, u da man!

Again, plz post your gfx card and any other info which affects your choice if poss. :)

Max details and highest quality with 8x AF at 1600x1200 is the defaut.
Sometimes I will throw 2x AA in for extra smoothness. :)

Edit: 9700Pro + Viewsonic P225fb 1600x1200 @ 85hz

Frankly it just depends if my card can run it at playable rates. I'm always willing to sacrafice some IQ for frame rates. "If" its neccasary.

Agreed that this is likely to happen, I'm just after your "most common" settings :)

Thnx for the replies guys!

Personally my GF2mx is so feeble I'm now looking for new ways to make things look worse and speed things up lol

hmm right now I am playing in 6x AA and 16X AF, My most demanding game being UT2003, NFS Hot Persuit 2, and Neverwinter Nights, @ 1024x768

They seem very playable under these settings. Tho I fear Unreal 2 will choke on my computer with these results. Same for Doom 3

These results aren't very meaningful if a specific video card is not specified.

Ah bugger, most ppl are ignoring the IQ options.. :banghead:

Could a Mod kindly edit out the offending last 2 options and set it so only one choice can be made plz?

I guess ppl didn't try selecting more than one thing before voting :(

Asus 8460 Deluxe GF4 TI4600 @325/725: 2xAA & 4x Aniso.

So far its worked surprisingly well in every game except America's Army. With the release of AA 1.6, it now works well with even that one.

Fair comment, but I'm trying to see what people are using NOW, and make an educated guess what settings people would prefer to be using. A little messy I know, but if most people are using No/2xAA with current cards, then the argument would be they'd be interested to see benchies of higher levels of AA/AF.

This is all down to some reviewers neglecting to bench above 2xAA, I wanted to satisfy my own feeling that people aren't using 2xAA out of choice, and that they want to know if they can push up their IQ with the new cards that are coming out.

Whit my Power Monster Gforce 4 Ti 4600 I can say that I absolutely can't play with no AA and/or AF at all, atleast not in the curent games

Couse Max detail whit 1024*768 is a must and then there's no power left for that eye candy whitch is to bad..I hate myself for buing that piese of crap, should have bought a Radeon 9700 insted..But as many others I went for the Gforce beqouse the reputation Ati had back then (drivers).!!
But as it is now Ati is the king of the hill, my hat of to them.!!
I soon as the Radeon 9800 come out here in Sweden I will be in the first line for it ;)
BTW it will be my first ATI card hehe..

It all depends on the game.

In CS I play with 2xAA, and 2xAF @ 1024x768, not alot you may think, but my frame-rates average around 80fps, and I like high frame-rates.

Heh. I run 4x (not 4xS) w/ 2 or 4xAF. (AF depending on the game.) in DX8 situations.
In DX7 situations, 4xS & 8xAF, & 4xFSAA & 8xAF in OGL.

I get good fps in all the situations... But then again, I consider ~50 & above good... lol

P3 700 & a GF4 Ti4200, 250/444.
(AthlonXP 1800+ & nForce2 in about a week tho :D )

In most games I use either:

1280x1024 with 2xAA and 16xAF

or
1024x684 with 4xAA and 16xAF

I don't run any game without at least 2xAA

...and no, I am not using a Nvidia-card... :D

I voted 2xAA 8xAF because thats what I use in half-life (and usually dont drop below 40fps EVER... unless there is a smoke grenade nearby).

In D3D games however, I usually run NO AA with 8x or 4x AF. If the game is really a system hog, I run 2x AF or no AF..... always at "Quality" settings ("Application" runs like crap, Performance looks like crap... so "Quality" is the only good choice).

For my more demanding games, I like using 4xAA and 8xAF. For older games, I have no issues running at 6xAA and 16xAF. In the original UT, I can run the game with these max options in OpenGL and sill average 90-100 fps at 1280x1024 resolution. That game has never looked so fabulous. :D

Because I play Papy Nascar Racing 2003, I run 6AA and 8AF. AA is vital in racing games because, in the distance, the turns look all jagged without it on.

Well I like 1280*1024 w/ 2xAA+4xAF but i cant run any new games like that on my current system anymore. Ravenshield I can only play at low res, so I also use 4xAA 2xAF, pick below or 800*600 Quinx AA+4xAF, Im still undecied, both give me about the same FPS, but Quinx is blurry!

640*480 4xAA 2xAF

or Quinx AA + 4xAA btw, ignore the FPS in the ss, its messed up in the ss, both settings run at around 30fps with 6 team members + 35 AI Tangos!!

You don't have mine listed.

2xAA, 4xAF in stages 0 and 1 forced trilinear, optimized in 3 and 4 no trilinear.

On a GF4Ti200 at 270/607

Just thought I would mention it, good show. ;)

CB:)

Tnx, Ubi soft made about 6 animated gifs for RavenShield, 2 for Splinter Cell. It would be good if other games makers could make them for thier fans :)

MOH and BF1942, both published by EA, I dont think EA would ever do something like that for free ;)

I rarely play anything other than UT2003 right now, but..

I've been comparing different settings, and right now the sweet spot for performance vs. IQ for me is 1024x768x32bits, physics normal, all else high in game, all detail options checked, 4xAA, quality 4x anisotropic filtering. I've played quite a bit at 4xAA, quality 8x aniso, and some at 4xAA, perf 8x aniso, but for best IQ and still retaining my framerates during heavy fighting, this seems to be it right now. It IS still very playable at higher aniso levels, but I've found that during heavy firefights I get a bit more stutter with 8x or higher, and since I play in ladders as part of a tdm clan, I need to make sure I can defend myself in those situations. :D

Note: Using performance aniso, I can go much higher, like all the way to 16x, but I notice weird graphical problems at times using those settings, mainly involving pixelated textures.

Edit: Correction- seems I've caught a case of mixedupitis. My sweet spot is 800x600x32, everything else the same, or it was as of the first time I posted this. :p. Right now it's 800x600x32, quality 4x aniso, everything else the same. (Changed aniso type and level due to some strange stuff I noticed in a couple maps in the game :afro: ).

Believe it or not Unreal II plays about the same speed as UT2003. At least that's how it felt to me.

See sig for system...

In UT2003 I play at 1024x768x32 All settings set to HIGH and Physics set to normal. Wtih 4X AA I average 60-80 fps indoors and somewhere around mid 40's to 60fps outdoors.
