Download Accelerator Plus

I've been using it a couple years now and love it. Noticeable speed boosts and works wonders getting stuff off crappy sites like nero.com
I just use the downthemall firefox extension. I used to use FlashGet though.

I don't use any.
Ya, but you don't have to have one. You people in the rest of the world have got broadband, so large downloads still only take about 32 seconds.

Well, these types of apps are not only for dial up users and you'd be surprised at the difference they can make even on Fios. It doesn't matter how fast your connection is, you are always limited to the bandwidth provided on the other side. These combine many crappy connections into one fast download. The benefit only increases as your connection gets faster;)

I use the flashgot extension for firefox and FlashGet along with it.
wget (http://www.gnu.org/software/wget/) inside screen (http://www.gnu.org/software/screen/) on my router box.
for uri in http://foo.com/file http://bar.com/file; do
wget "$uri"
done
Getright or Flashget. I alternate. Neither handle large download queues very well, but one seems to do better than the other from time to time.
I highly suggest the FlashGot plugin for Firefox, as well.

im using dap too, but im using like version 5.4 or something. Tried the new version but was too bloated like most software does when it becomes popular.
I only use it for large downloads, for small files I dont bother.

Try freedownloadmanager.org (http://www.freedownloadmanager.org/)
I used DAP til it got bloated as well. FDM works flawlessly with Flashgot, Firefox and IE.

yup they were getting pretty bad but the newest version that came out last week is a step in the right direction. It's much better than 8.1 or whatever it was. Still, its tough to recommend buying something like this anymore when there are similar free apps out there.

FDM does NOT have redirects from php sites. For example...go download a track at rfactorcentral. You end up downloading "go.php" (neither does Getright). Not to mention, it's javascrap.
I've tried them all, Getright, DAP, FDM, Flashget, etc. Get one that supports MMS and RTSP protocols. I use Flashget or Orbit. Flashget even supports torrents!
Here is a comparison list.

I bought Getright ages ago. I love it. Has saved me a lot of trouble over the years. Glad they dropped Gator from the installer too.

Bah tried download managers but only tops out at 550k on average from file planet and am a paying member :( Speedtest sites seem to show 9-10Mbit connection and downloads from very few sites @ 1.17MB/sec. Next month i am getting upgraded to 20Mbit and am starting to think. whats the ****ing point 2.34MB/second what site gives that much bandwith to peers?
Got to love cable however took less then 5 minuites to upgrade from a 4MB to a 10MB connection. :)

IMO download manager are only useful for large downloads if you plan to turn off your computer. Personally I run wget in screen on my router in such occasion.

ftp.fi.debian.org for example. :-)

Took me 40 minutes to get new a new static IP (as in secondary IP) at Friday evening at 8 PM using email to communicate with my ISP. That consisted of asking for details, getting reply, placing an order, getting confirmation, and having it all working. ADSL2 here.

Download statusbar firefox extension. Its nice, no extra window, amd shows up as a little box in your status bar (the bottom border) and you can:
- double-click the file to execute when its done.
- Right click the file for context options, including opening the folder where the download is.
- Hover the mouse over the download to see status (speed, locale, etc.)
Its a nifty utility, much better than the default download box.
