From the press conference of AMD.

Benchmark of R600, looks to be 260 watts. Can anything be done to bring that down as time goes on? That is fairly high consumption.

With the next version of the R600-based cards, you will see power go down, while performance goes up. Another result of the two companies coming together. Gamers want performance at any cost, and AMD is focused on optimizing dissipation of that thermal energy. 30db noise level coming on multiple CPU and GPU in the near future.

I sure hope AMD has something jaw-dropping up their sleeve- for both GPU's and CPUs.

30db noise from the GPU?!?! Gah!

how much does the 8800gtx use?

I don't really understand why people are so excited about the R600. It's probably going to still have unfiltered fp16 RTs, and it's still probably going to not have trilinear filtering. They've already said that they're more considered about performance in every interview I've seen.

How is 2 overclocked 8800gtx's in SLI not fast enough for everything you can throw at it plus still be fast enough even if there were IQ features there that could've been there but weren't and should've been there but weren't?

I'm not trying to be rude, but I mean, it's been what I've been dying to know.

Around 170W & peak at 200W if i'm not mistaken.

260W is sure lotsa power! hope the performance is well worth the wattage!

The clock speeds are probably going to be high as **** and it's going to have ****ty IQ and break the previous record by ~60 W.

That's pretty low....why the Gah?

Magus likes to HEAR his cards perform.

He's probably going to add a muffler a la the Ricer's you see around, a huge fin at the back and racing stripes to make it GO.

Naturally I keed !!!

We need to remember that supposedly it also doubles as a sound card- so that is more than likely the reason for the insane amount of power being used. Ontop of that, we must also remember they probably have some sort of physics acceleration chip on the card as well. When you consider all of that- I find it perfectly reasonable that it consumes that much power.

My 8800GTXs are pretty quiet... only time I hear them is if I let WoW run for a really long time (like I go afk and watch TV for acouple hours). My PSU is the loudest thing in my PC...

Yeah, WoW kills my 8800GTXs too. They beg for mercy.

Actually, mine are completely, 100% silent. (pimp)

Never said it kills them but they generate more heat if any game is running for 5+ hours (I rarely game that much anymore, only time its running that long is when I forget to log off).

Shouldn't it reach a steady state long before then? That's how stuff normally works.

What an R600 will look like after a good Oblivion session:

I swear - we are approaching the days where solder will not be enough to hold these cards together.

Yea, After playing TDU the card kicks up pretty good. It still isn't too bad as I've had louder cards like my TI4200 with the poor fan design. It did a good cooling job, but the newer designs are much better overall.

think about it, first its only going to be a sound card when its using HDMI. second if its doing sound calculations isnt this going to be done on one of the shader units, not an external chip? ive come to that conclusion because i would tend to think that the board itself would be larger then 9 1/2" if it had an external chip for sound. im also thinking that the sound feature isnt going to be implemented in games but will be for say movies, just for the simple fact of performance and i would think that games would have to be coded for the new sound system.

That very well may be so- that doesn't decrease the power draw if all the components (GPU, APU, PPU) are slapped onto one PCB. I still feel the power draw isn't all that unlrealistic when you consider everything on the card.

Why would they throw a sound chip on the card? Dumb...

Probably 80-90% of the enthusiast community already owns a sound card. In such cases, this would be a waste and an unnecessary power draw. Not to mention excessive heat.

This forum tends to lose sight of the fact that the enthusiast community are a very small percentage of PC users overall. People who use their systems as media centers want sound through their video card when using an HDMI connection so it's not dumb at all. For cards that don't have an HDMI port the sound will likely not be enabled on the card since it wouldn't provide any functionality.

Many do use midline GPUs because you really don't need high-end 3d capabilities for a strictly media PC. However, there are those who want a media center PC that can play games really well too. Anyone buying a high-end card with an HDMI port is likely to use it for that very purpose. (media center/games on HDTV)
