Once I figured how to open the case, I could finally get around to checking out Microsoft's Vista operating system. Here is my story, all condensed in 5 pages...

http://www.nvnews.net/articles/vista_install/images/packaging_s.jpg

I began working on this article when I first acquainted myself with Microsoft's new Windows Vista operating system. About a month ago, I spent a weekend installaing, uninstalling, and fiddling around with the 32-bit and 64-versions of Vista. Vista itself seemed pretty solid, but 3D gaming was a hit or miss adventure with NVIDIA's 100.25 beta graphics driver.

Check it out here - http://www.nvnews.net/articles/vista_install/index.shtml

Nice article buddy :)

UAC is preferably disabled for most tasks. I can live without it now that I have been using Vista RTM for several months.

Have you had a chance to play around with Office 2007 Ultimate yet? Works like a dream

Great article, Mike. :D

Looks like there's a ton of potential here, but it's still not quite there. Hopefully when some DX10 titles come out, Vista will be the OS to be running.

LOL

I've always found it interesting how this is his site yet he has a low post count. I just assumed he'd have the highest post count- but I guess he's too busy keeping things in line for all of us...

Nice article and good read. But.......

:D

^^^ Like that nut job. :p

Nice article on Vista Mike. This looks like a very wise setup using a dual boot of either XP or Vista. I am thinking of doing something similar but with Vista 64. The Fear numbers look really good and is very encouraging that performance can exceed a very well seasoned operating system, that is XP.

I have Vista 32bit Home Premium on my other machine at home and been holding off for my machine with a 8800 GTX. Appears Nvidia drivers are improving as well so I can see me doing this in the near future. Please keep us up to date, any chance you will take a ride with the 64 bit version of Vista? :)

I think there's a typo on page 3, I've never heard of the Audigy 2 ZX before :p

"Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZX" maybe you were thinking ZX from the Logitech MX

Nice article Mike!

As far as the case, I had gotten a screwdriver and was getting ready to pry the dang case open before I finally figured out how to open it.

Did you see the screwdrivers in the background of Mike's pic. In the potted plants. :D I think he was also close to using them.

Hey Mike, long time no chat. I thought the article was thorough, but it seems to have a problem with the layout. I felt confused reading through it like the pages were in the wrong order. Like, the system configuration should have been stated at the very beginning, not half way through. Also, It got weird when you listed all the additional hard drives... I mean I know you don't have a bottomless wallet, but It could have been a little cleaner. Maybe just grab like four cheap 160GB drives.

I also felt kinda "left hanging" when charts were not included for all the games you tested. I mean, what exactly does "The Nightfall campaign was a solid performer" mean?

You also stated that you tested 32 and 64 bit in the beginning of the article, but none of your charts reflect that, and neither does your writing.

Just some constructive criticism :D

Thanks for the feedback. Yes, I installed Vista 64-bit a few times and would be using it had I not encountered a problem connecting to Steam.

You're right. The backup section at the bottom of page 1 should have appeared on the bottom of page 2. See if it makes sense now. I also re-worded the comment about Guild Wars.

I can add comments about 64-bit Vista. I have quite a few notes and benchmark results, but didn't include them.

Nice review Mike! I'm glad I got an OEM copy, I'd probably have taken a Dremel to the retail packaging. :)

just out of curiosity why do you install your apps on a dif partition than the os? I want to setup my hdds in a similar fashion but was going to put os + apps on one, then games, then storage.

just out of curiosity why do you install your apps on a dif partition than the os?The main reason is to limit the amount of data in the OS partition. Backup files will be smaller and save and restore operations will run faster.

Programs that I install on their own partition are those that don't need to be backed up and saved along with the OS partition. For example, programs that don't rely on registry entries to work since the registry gets overwritten during an OS restore.
