Thought it would be good to have a semi official news thread dedicated to GTA:IV up until release which we can bump anytime new info on the game is released.

I'll get the ball rolling with some basic info and scans.
Setting: re-created Liberty City (better mirrors real-world NYC; smaller "geographical mass" than San Andreas, but more densely populated)

MetLife building = "Getalife"
Statue of Liberty = "Statue of Happiness"
DUMBO = "BOABO" (Beneath the Offramp of the Algonquin Bridge Overpass)

Area includes an adaptation of four of NYC's boroughs (no love for Staten Island), and a section of Jersey:
Manhattan = "Algonquin" (The Lenape did speak an Algonquin language from which our word "Manhattan" is derived)
Brooklyn = "Broker"
Queens = "Dukes" (a duke ranks just below a prince)
Bronx = "Bohan"
New Jersey = "Alderney" (also named for one of the British Channel Islands -- or a breed of cattle)

Main character: Niko Bellic; "Eastern European" ('cause who really keeps track of the countries over there?)

Lured to Liberty by cousin Roman's suspicious emails (Roman claims to be living the America Dream: 2 women, 4 hot tubs, and 15 sports cars); Roman actually operates a rundown taxi depot in Broker and has gotten himself into a "load of trouble"
NEWS FLASH: "Many of Niko's activities revolve around being a criminal"

Miscellaneous:
NPCs: lots of "non-American" characters, varied behaviors (e.g., shopping, drinking, smoking, chirping, hurrying, or just maxing on the stoop), "context sensitive," and dependent on environment; more freaks: "angry yuppies" and "lunatics"
Dynamic storyline: "A big part of the game is delivering story in new ways and allowing the player to plot their [sic] own destiny"; less of a sense of being a slave to NPCs' demands; communication is also dynamic (in person, by celly, etc.)
No planes; but motorbikes
Improved physics; characters' movements are influenced by weight and variations in physical terrain
Emphasis on night and day lighting
Seamless loading after initial boot (even between indoor and outdoor environments)
No details about targeting system -- but Rockstar claims to have found the new "sweet spot"
Voice casting will not focus on big-name stars; soundtrack will reflect 2007
Crime experts and ex-police have helped Rockstar create a realistic contemporary criminal atmosphere (i.e., it's not the 80s or 90s anymore; crime and crime-fighting have evolved)
Multiplayer confirmed; not MMO
Both Xbox 360 and PS3 version will 'likely' be identical; Xbox 360 version will include exclusive episodic content (what about PS3?)

This game will own me come fall. I just hope its not a bad or limited 360 port being that 360 seems to be their main focus with all that money MS dropped in there lap.

I'm curious why they left out staten island. It would've been nice to have the verazzano bridge (with its $9 toll) and a bunch of landfills, or even to have long island to bring a more suburban atmosphere for a change of pace.

Does anyone think when they say they'll have parts of NJ, that they could possibly have Atlantic City and playable casinos? (even though in real life it's not all that close to NY).

I really hope they have other cities. After playing San Andreas with its 3 cities, I dont think I can got back to a 1 city only GTA.

Maybe they'll put in new locations later. There will be "episodic content".

I am glad there is no loading in between indoor and outdoor!!!

NYC has what we call boroughs. There are five of them and each is kind of like its own little city. They say there really trying to get authenticity down so I don't think you have much to worry about.

Yeah I know that but at the end of the day its still 1 city. I have a feeling they aren't showing everything anyway.

What is this crap about it being only a console game. Is Rockstar stupid or something.

lol. They're completely building a next-gen game ground-up and being console only means they have a lot of advantages. Now they can optimize the code for ps3 and 360 for best performance not to mention, they'll easily sell more copies on console than on PC. I'm sure it'll eventually come to PC, until then....buy your favorite console because there's plenty of other titles that you'll be missing out on. ;)

One game? Come on. If anything consoles have a wider selection of games you will find that you like than whats on PC. That said I think it will come to the PC but as always they announce like 6 months later. In the case of GTA: SA I think the wait was worth it because the PC version was way better but I dont think that will be the case this time around.

GTA: Nottingham would have been better, that has Five Boroughs, technically six... but with more car crime (Aka Grand Theft Auto) than NY , plus Robin Hood lol

Why on earth was all this story plot gangster rubbish ever involved with GRAND THEFT AUTO ?

that's why I mentioned that plenty of other titles are on their way. As for buying a console for just one game, I didn't realize if you were like plenty of others on these forums who spend thousands of dollars on their rigs updating them to get 8800gtx's and stuff for crysis but will end up upgrading atleast once more before the game even comes out.

if you haven't noticed, some users in the nvnews forums have some pretty deep wallets.

Nope, no guns.

But they themselves get shot alot, lol ...all they can do is hide and call in the armed cops. Those guys are insane, they just shoot everything. I think their body count of innocents tops that of bad guys downed in the last ten or so years lol

You're kidding right? It's called Grand Theft Auto because you steal a car once every 5 min in this game and all the gangster stuff is just a romanticized thing in american culture. THe Godfather, Goodfellas, Scarface....all these movies sold well and became a part of pop culture.

No, what I mean is ....there is less emphasis on the grand theft of automobils in the recent games compared to the first couple which were aimed towards pinching cars.

May aswell just rename the whole GTA franchise, considering it now has very little to do with stealing cars.
