Not really very surprised, it used the same chip as the prototype back in November 2006. AMD waited 8 months to fixed the drivers to match or ahead of Geforce 8800GTX. If R600 been released in November 2006, it would not compete Geforce 8800GTX in term of performance due to very poor drivers.

I'm hoping the following ends up being true:

"First, R600 is going to be more affordable than any GPU part after Radeon 9700Pro and 9800Pro. AMD wants to undercut current high-end price bracket by $100-150, so expect an 8800GTX performing part for the price of 8800GTS. This is not all.

The company is getting the 65nm part on line as soon as possible, as this will enable savings in power well within the 60-100 Watt range, depending on what part are we talking about."

I may end up buying my 1st ATI card, or better....Nvidia will have to drop their prices and 8900 GTX will be super affordable.

We really need AMD to come out with a hitter on this one. If they can manage to undercut 8800 prices, there is no way in hell nvidia will be selling the ultra at $1k.http://img260.imageshack.us/img260/9525/09ew1.jpg (http://img260.imageshack.us/my.php?image=09ew1.jpg)

Competition is always good for the consumer, let's hope AMD/ATi delivers and helps drive those prices down.

We don't know much but we can confirm that ATI is working on a smaller R600 marchitecture based chip codenamed R650. It is officially messed up with R600. The R600 chip is simply too hot and it has terrible heat dissipation and this problem has to be fixed. Dissipation of 230+ Watts is simply too much for any graphic chip and any standard.

We are seeing R520 got swapped with R580 situation all over again and this can definitely confirm that R600 won't have a good and great life. R600 will be replaced as soon as possible as soon as the R650 redesign is done. This is a very expensive but desperate move.

We don't know any schedules about R650 but we are sure that it comes later than Q2.

It IS from Fuad, but interesting nonetheless.

Who said the ultra will be $999?

Just wondering.

If it's a single GPU it will be 599 and then the GTX will drop in price.

The gtx has been out for 5 months, so it will go down in price when the ultra comes out.

But 'Fuad' is only one letter away from 'Fud'.

I just don't see how AMDTI could release a part that will cook itself, and hope to give NV any competition.

I could be wrong, but I've just never trusted his word.

I heard it first on Vr-Zone which is located in Singapore. They also use "dollars" but $999 in Singapore currency is ~650 USD.

I've also heard it from someone who claims to be under NDA and claims that it is really USD where the $999 figure comes from.

I am not sure which to believe, but I just don't see the financial sense in the $1k USD price point. You can get 8800GTXs for $500 now and two 8800's will be significantly faster (in XP) than whatever the "ultra" card brings.

It is possible that Nvidia is pumping up the price for maximum profit margin until R600 comes out. Maybe they think they will beat ATI's R600 to market and are leveraging poor vista SLI drivers to promote the expensive Ultra over an SLI solution.

True, but Fuad has almost always been kinda pro-ATI, so...

Don't know, I think the best thing to do is wait and see ;) :D
