Good question....I don't know. To join avi files I use Windows Movie Maker. Doing this will convert them to wmv though.

And yes, their website is horrid.

If you need a good utility, use Virtual Dub... It does tons of stuff with AVI, including multiplexing, demultiplexing, joining, cutting, converting, filtering.
