8800 Ultra, Ultra Rare?

Interesting if this is true.

A FEW MORE bits to add to the 8800 Ultra story. Word has it that the Ultra edition will use the same PCB as the GTX but with a modified cooler. NV is aiming at a 15-20 per cent bump in the benches.
The daftest part is that production is limited to tens of units, not tens of thousands. We hear tens, closer to zero than 100. If there are any left over after the press get theirs, they will go to boutique builders and similar low-volume places. There won't be enough to supply the big boys initially, if ever.

No word about drivers. Ironically, you will probably be hard pressed to find two of these puppies anywhere, so the chronic inability to deliver working SLI won't hamper this launch much. Come on guys, it has only been five months. µ

I still think NVIDIA feeds lies to Inq sources to throw off the competition. Every now and then they'll get something right, but that's more random chance than anything. It was a matter of weeks before the 8800 launch before they really had any accurate information, before that time they were wildly off.

Were any of the cards officially named the Ultra Extreme Edition, or is that just what they called the oc'ed ones? 450/600 instead of 425/550, if i remember correctly.

I used to own the Ultra OC, the EE was supposed to be a lot higher clocked than my old card.

from what i remember it wasnt an official nvidia card,the OEM's just cherry picked a bunch of higher clocked chips and labeled it as such.

Well maybe the history just repeats.
ATI was very late with X1800 series card and NVIDIA was ready to spoil the introduction with the step-up 7800 GTX with 512MB. The card was in very short supply and therefore very expensive.
If the 7800 GTX 512MB was by ATI most people here would actually call it paper launch.

Ati soon after introduced X 1900 series and Nvidia couple months later introduced the 7900GTX 512MB Cards, making the 7800 GTX 512MB not such a good deal, well there was none available anyway.

So maybe the 8800GTX Ultra is just fast patch-up before shortly after introducing the 8900GTX cards.

Anyway who knows for sure, but the above speculation isn't worst than any INQUIRER insider information about NVIDIA. I don't think they have many friendly insiders there. :)

why all people are sure that nvidia will make another 7800 GTX 512, they had the time to make a new whole card on new process instead of just overclocked G80 so when they just go with the easyer way it will be much easy to do it.i believe

The 5400 quadro looks much like an 8800GTX, and the 5600 quadro with 1.5 gigs of memory is spec'ed slightly higher.

I really don't see the need for 1.5GB RAM on a gaming card right now. Besides, if they did do it that way, it'd probably be atrociously expensive, making it look more bad than good.

I only see 575mhz-core/900(1800)mhz-mem, that's the standard gtx right? Looks like they might have taken down whatever was there, anyone happen to know what that was?

i do, it would be a good way of sort of future proofing my card. since i only buy a new card nowadays once every 11/2 years i sort of see it as an investment.

Plus low-res textures are a pet peeve of mine so the more memory cards get the less we'll have to gouge our eyes out because of them.:D
