This question is becomming pretty much a regular, but most threads are for 8800GTS, and flashing a 8800GTX with a GTS bios is bad news so here goes:

Ok so basicly, alot of people on a 8800GTX seem to be having really high temperatures with their 8800GTX (70 - 80 degrees celsius :thumbdwn:). My card has the default Gainward fan and runs idle at 54 Degrees celcius and stressed (Medieval 2 Total war holds the record) 60 degrees celcius.

Now I was wondering where I could get myself a decent BIOS with higher shader clocks. I am also thinking about overclocking the core/mem. I think it's fairly safe at these temperatures but I certainly do not want to fry it...

Anybody knows where to get a BIOS that works on a Gainward 8800GTX? Also does anybody have an idea on how far I should go? 620/2000 with 1.9GHz shader sounds awesome, but I do NOT want this card to melt the whole heatsink... :D

What about Nibitor? Can I make my own BIOS based on the original Gainward Rev1 Bios?

Increasing the shader clock has a very minimal impact on performance from what I've seen. And no one has been able to push it all the way to 1900mhz yet. 1550 is as high as I've seen it clocked.

As for flashing the BIOS, why would you want to take such a risk? Why not just use RivaTuner or ATI Tool to overclock it with and select the option to start Windows w/ the overclock you have set?

There is really never any need to flash the BIOS on a videocard. I've seen people screw their cards up by doing this.

Did you read the Nvbios thread? Those clocks have been pushed up quite a bit and they seem to be stable for most people

Yea, shader clocks makes a pretty big performance difference in 3DMark06, even moreso than memory clock. 1.9GHz shader is a little high. Most cards should be able to do 620/1.55/2.0

Jakup, what about temps, I think I'm doing pretty damn well (for a stock cooled 8800GTX). 50 idle, 60 stressed, most people say they reach 80s, is my temp sensor broke or something? or are the Thermaltake armor fans doing it's job?

Not very hot in this room, got airconditioning here, generally put it on 20 degrees celcius, when it's off it's generally 23 to 25 here.

Trademark, do you have a link for that thread that you mentioned before?

Also, can you overclock the shaders w/o flashing the BIOS?

My eVGA card idles at 60C and runs full load at about 80C. Even so... thats not that hot. These cards have a threashold of like 125C or maybe even 135C. I would not worry about it.

Mines a GTS, but I flashed mine from nvbios too... here is a link for the gainward 8800 GTX:

http://www.nvbios.com/downloads/OC_BIOS/Gainward%208800%20GTX%20Premium%20Edition/Express/SingleImage/DiskImages/DISK1/

There are backup bios's for most brands / cards too. It can be installed/run from within windows.

This clocks the GTX to:

625mhz clock, 2ghz memory, 1450 shader clock.

If you ever ran your card that hot, then you could pour it in a blender with some gin and ice and serve it as a ****tail.

Well ya... id never run it that hot or accept temps that hot. But if you are getting 80c or 85c it's nothing to cry over.. no harm will be done. :p

Ouch! Thats frick'n hot on the GPU over 90c!

Btw, make sure your GPU fan speeds are set to 75% or higher. Not too high or else it will be very audible! I had RivaTuner 2.0 accidentially kept the Fan to 60% of its max and damn was limited to 652/1016 and my GPU temps were 56c idle|75c load! Now look at my sig when I kept the GPU Fan @ 85%! Much better overclock and temps + more room to go. Temps in my lab are between 17-22c.

I wouldn't care about my fan making noise, I put mine on 100% in experttool, not sure if it's actually 100% though...

True enough but now I'm @ 270/1026 and running @ 85% fan speed. Quite happy. Ran multiple 3dmark2006 and high-end gaming checks and it all passes without ever crashing. Highest GPU Temp 67c. Before @ 60% fan speed it was 75c+. OUCH!!!

I'm still looking for the links to these claims...

The above is a awsome site, everything you need to update and edit your own bios! .... my cards at 615MHz clock core, 1458MHz Shader Clock & 2.0MHz memory! .... idles at 50c with 85% fan speed.

Get nvFlash v5.50 & NiBiTor.v3.4...

Download your latest bios(dont overclock)and flash with nvflash, if everythg goes ok then your set to edit with NiBiTor.....

Cooll, not bad for a GTS
