Any ideas what is doing this, reinstalled windows and it still does the same. Anytype of media be it CD-R, DVD-R, DVD+R or DL DVD+R is detected as 700MB CD's. Does this mean my writer is on it's way out? Thinking of ordering 2 SATA DVD RW drives but they are rare in the UK. They are cheap but no one stocks them.

which asus drive do you have?

is it one of the older ones based on Pioneer DVR-110/DVR-111?

or the brand new one that uses asus own made desing on mediatek chip?

It's the DRW-1608P2 think it's based on the Pioneer DVR-111. Have had it for about a year or so now. Has been working fine intill recently.

make sure you're bitsetting's are set to CD-R
if you have nero, it could potentially do it automatically, i'd try the drives in another machine to see if its a hardware issue

I think you are right, Windows Vista picks them up as DVD's rather then CD's

there is no bitsetting on CD-Rs

you can only set bitsetting on DVD+R/+RW/+R DL media on certain drives. Asus has no bitsettings option, but if i remmember correctly it set bitsetting to dvd-rom for dvd+r dl automatically.
