Also, we've been told from the inception of Vista that it will up to about 10% slower for gaming.
By whom? That's not correct at all, at least not for full-screen mode. Once the drivers catch up, gaming should be faster on Vista in many cases. Just look at the ATI driver comparisons between XP and Vista. And they're still fleshing out their Vista drivers as well.

TDU stuttering is completely gone here.(nana2)
Just tried the 165.01 driver and it improved stuttering, but it not get rid of it.
My experience is that these drivers (over 101.70):
*Still no fan control
**still no DV
***HDR +AA doesn't work in stalker anymore
****MORE stuttering in Stalker (non with 101.70)
so there isn't any reason to upgrade at all; I reverted back to 101.70's
Now the problem is: should I install the 165.01 or the 158.18?
Please, give me an advice.

With 165 I got "flashing white boxes" around ghosts in the game "Oblivion" with HDR + AA enabled with 158 I did not, for whatever the reason.
Here's another vote for 158.

HDR and AA NEVER worked in Stalker...

Man, I can't decide which driver to use.
I want better performance in STALKER if possible. I guess I'll try the 165.01 betas. If I'm not happy, I'll use the official drivers.
Thanks. What I care most in Vista at the moment is stability so want to install the most stable rather than the most performing.

By Microsoft. LOL.
"Microsoft is telling certain folks in the gaming industry that gaming on Vista will be at least 10-15% slower than Windows XP. This is because one has to keep the 3D desktop loaded all the time. This is ironic since Microsoft's claim to the developers was that the same API (Application Protocol Interface) can do stuff up to four times faster."

Stalker still stinks to play in Vista. These drivers seem to made performance lower in Stalker.

Sticking with 158 drivers till Nvidia have the newer ones hosted. Interesting little quip in the release notes pdf
Lost Planet–game menu is corrupted

I'm pretty Sure that article is old hat because Firingsquad did an test on Aero & gaming and it was found theres a zero drop in frames with it on or old XP style rendering as its killed before any game is ran.

Use 158.18, they are officially released by Nvidia, so pretty safe, cause they are decent enough to release (beta)
the newer ones maybe do have extra fixes, improvements, but maybe they are still quite unstable

Yea, at the time its all I can find. There was another article I saw that was a direct quote. The article has probably been pulled though. In any case Anandtech has done a performance comparison as have many others and Vista is always behind XP with the exception of FEAR. I am playing Stalker in both Vista and XP with 165s and it's a noticable difference in performance between them still.
HDR and AA NEVER worked in Stalker...
Seems like I get AA/HDR with Stalker with the 101.70's; Anyway, I've switched to the nvidia release and that runs STALKER better (no hitching) and I crashed to desktop with the 101.70's after I reloaded those this a.m.
So far so good with Nvidias 158 but I must say the are really slow to implement any nice features I've been waiting for...
Stalker still crashing here with vista x64 unless I force precaching off. :thumbdwn:
Infact it doesnt just crash to desktop with these, these give a bluescreen and reset the system. LOL
Can't get any OpenGL app to run on this version: D3, Q4, JKJA either crashing on start up or reporting that my 8800 doesn't support necessary features.
Now. 158.18 doesn't support 1280x960 - my working resolution. 165.01 have ****ed up OpenGL support. So many choices! I'm stunned! No, really.

This depends if you're CPU limited or Video card limited.
Evetually once the drivers mature we can expect faster video card performance on Vista, however CPU usage will always be greater than XP unless you disable a lot of services.
If your bottleneck is your CPU when running XP then expect games to be slower in Vista.

We've been hearing that forever, just wondering when we'll actually see something happen.

I hope we see it happen soon enough (e.g. Crysis)
Games will be faster in DX10 anyway!!!
Yeah. If they launch at all on GeForce. And that's a big 'if' judging by how things are going with NV's drivers...

I am running 165.01
I think most people with problems need to uninstall, reboot into safe mode and run a driver-cleaner. I have heard all kind of complaints the games are crashing like C&C 3 etc..
C&C 3 is running fine here, so is COH, COJ, F.E.A.R, TDU, N4S Carbon. Best driver so far. AA+HDR in Rainbow six las vegas fine, aa+hdr in oblivion and tdu also fine. Smooth performance in all of the above games.
I always had crappy performance in COH when enabling trilinear filtering on and supersampling on and aa gamma correction, now all those settings are enabled and it is running like silk.
But I never succeded in any xp or vista driver so far to get AA working in STALKER. Any help on this would be great.. If I force AA for stalker in the first scene of the game in vista i just see a blue sky, in xp i force it it looks fine but aa is not really on, lots of jaggies.
It looks very close to the first dx10 game, the dx10 patch for COH is almost done.. I really want to test a dx10 game with these drivers.
