View Full Version : Am I the only one dead sick of Nvidia blocking overclocking 8800-vista?
Forget ATI Tools, it's flaky under Vista, use Expert Tool .50, works great.
Nope, errors saying incorrect device or expertool has stopped responding.
The point here is why is Nvidia blocking this and making us resort to all these half baked workarounds in the first place?

Update:
I just booted my computer up cold without using F8 and now ATi Tool gives me the error we have discussed and won't load. I then restarted using F8 to defeat driver check and now it works again. I think I will just stick with an F8 start instead of bothering with the CMD line since it is unreliable.
I went and checked W1zzard's notes on ATi Tool and he does indeed say driver check has to be disabled under Vista x64 for it to function.

I get the error even when forcing it off on startup. :headexplode:
I did every single step suggested in this thread and not any of it worked. Any overclocks even by 1 get immediately reset to default numbers as soon as you hit apply no matter what tool I try. It just doesn't work. I give up. I'm just going to buy a new ati card when they release. This is a waste of time.

Ya.. the new nVidia driver just broke fan control for me (again). This **** is pissing me off... im ready to go ATi and stay ATi just to spite nVidia for dropping the ball on the simple but much needed ****.
What I don't get is they expect you to pay $600 to $700 for one of their products where important features such as overclock and fan control simply don't work? People who buy 8800's don't buy them to surf the web. :thumbdwn:

I flashed my 8800GTX BIOS to 600/2000 clock speeds on January 29th and Installed Vista X64 OEM January 30th. I've been running at these speeds ever since.

I got EEPROM not supported. How if I can, do I get around this when using nvflash?
Nevermind, it was because I was using an older ver of nflash. Just flashed to 630/2000. I'll see how it handles. Just wish I had on the fly control.

Try right clicking on the ATiTool desktop icon and selecting "run as an administrator" from the drop down menu in addition to the F8 driver check disable.

After the BIOS POST, hit F8 to get into the Windows boot options menu. select the option to turn off driver signing checking. You will need to do this every time you either install or run ATITool. Personally it's not worth it, since the new version of nTune:

supports OCing on my 7950GX2 and will probably also work with your 7900GT.

Gee, that's funny...I can overclock my 8800 GTX, and the fan runs sufficiently to keep the card within spec temperatures.

Now that the 158 drivers are "signed", all the o/c programs work again. (nana2)
Ntune 5.05.38 is out. might fix some of these problems?
http://www.nvidia.com/object/ntune_5.05.38.00.html
Use ATiTool to test frequencies, when you find the proper one that is fast and stable, use Nibitor, load up VGA BIOS, modify freq. entries, save it into file.
Download NVFlash tool, create bootable floppy and copy bios file and nvflash stuff on it. Boot the PC and flash it over. Only 100% way to OC in Vista at the moment. With no stupid neverending problems with all the OC tools.
