View Full Version : Am I the only one dead sick of Nvidia blocking overclocking 8800-vista?
I am so darn aggrevated with every new driver that comes out blocking the ability to use any overclocking too incl ntune on a 8800 with vista. The latest 58 series still does nothing. After spending this much money on the 8800gtx and the lack of support I can't wait till mid may comes around and my choices open up. This is starting to be a case of the prinicipal of the matter over anything else and I feel burned by Nvidia and I will not soon forget this. I know I'm only one customer and the fanboys will call me a whiner and all, but I know I am not alone in my thinking. :thumbdwn: :thumbdwn: :thumbdwn:
Put a fork in me cause I'm done.

If you are not using Vista for the benefits of the new OS, then why are you using it at all? But thanks for trying....
And my card is overclocked, just flash the card bios.

Just use the 100.65's and ExperTool and your set! At least I have had zero issues with this driver set and overclocking. Also ATi Tool is another choice if ExperTool either does not work or is not your cup of tea.

xgman,
As mentioned in this thread, USE ATITOOL .27 BETA1 !!! It works in Vista! There is no reason for you to be whining when there are multiple ways of o/c'ing your card. I've used ATITool successfully with 100.65, 101.41 and now 158.18.

Same Atitool works fine. And it's easy to use there's no reason to have to use ntune.
ATITool is bugged in vista x64 and expertool is not compatible with my GTX and ntunes just doesnt work.. "sigh"

ATI tools works fine, used it last night.
It requires signed drivers which it doesn't come with however there are numerous ways to disable driver signing in Vista x64 if you care to look them up.

Driver signing is disabled, it's still bugged. Stops working after a few restarts so I need to keep reinstalling it. :thumbdwn:

I haven't been able to get ATiTool working on x64 either. Here's what I've been doing:
1. Restart and use F8 to disable driver signing.
2. Install ATiTool.
3. Restart and use F8 to disable driver signing.
4. ATiTool says "Kernel driver isn't running."

ATi Tool was working on my rig now I get what you describe. Expertool loads fine and doesn't alter my fan speed when I apply changes. When I apply clock changes it seems to do it and bench scores don't change so I'd say it's not working. I've tried running Riva tuner as an admin and it won't load properly either.
If install nTune it takes forever for the driver CP to load and when it does the choice area is completely blank. So I can't alter anything. Wish nVidia would fix whatever is causing the problem. As is I can't control my GPU fan or monitor its temperature.
I am about to install a Thermalright HR03 Plus on my GTX so I'll get fan control via another route.
The problems I am describing are on Vista x64.

Disabling the driver signing is picky and even some of these methods are reported to renable themselves after a number of restarts, not much is known about why or how to fix it.
The most reliable way of disabling driver signing is this:
1) Open the start menu, search for "CMD"
2) Before you hit return, find the cmd file in the menu above and right it and run as administrator
3) in the cmd window type:
bcdedit -set loadoptions DDISABLE_INTEGRITY_CHECKS
and then press return
Note that the Double "D" in DDISABLE is NOT a typing mistake.
4) Install ATI tools 0.27 Beta 1
You shouldn't need to use F8 on startup anymore, in fact theres a distinct possibility that if you do it will disable driver signing for that sessions (which it will be anyhow) but then re-enable it after the next reboot.

The only way I can get ATi Tool to work again when it starts to fail is to I uninstall it and remove the driver from the device manager. I then use the disable check from CMD. After I reinstall and reboot it works again. I also set the app to run in winxp compatibility mode and as an admin.
Soon driver fan control won't matter for me because of the HR03 Plus so I'll be set. Guess I will just have to occasionally uninstall and reinstall ATi Tool when it fails.
Another thing I love to do with ATi Tool is use it to set my 2d clocks to 300. When I am not using my GTX and just browsing etc that drops its idle temps by about 6C.
...and the 158.18 drivers.
Maybe it's me, but the latest ver of Expertool does NOT work with 158x. When you chnage the clocks and hit apply, they change right back to defaults. This is only an issue with Vista and 8800's. I know it works with other cards or with xp.

OK, again it stopped working for me with driver 101.70 and does the same reset when applied as expertool. It was working fine prior to 101.70 however. So is it just me? If so, then what the heck is wrong? I did a cmplete uninstall procedure with 158's. Should I uninstall and reinstall atitoo/expertool? Are you sure this works with 8800gtx and Vista32???
I'll try some of these suggestions above and see, but still why does Nvidia have an oveclocking control applett if it doesn't work?? Seems it's there just to aggrevate me.

Tried it, it doesnt fix the "Kernel driver isn't running" error.

Does that command come back with the msg "Command Successful" or something to that effect?
You might want to try restarting after you've done it (before you install ATI Tool)
The "Kernal Driver isn't running" error is DEFINATELY related to driver signing and I definately got it working last night, so we know it's possible with these drivers.

It did say it was successful and I did restart afterwards and i've reinstalled atitool many times afterwards.

Here's a stab in the dark. Did you make sure the ATi Tool driver was removed under the device manager after you removed the application itself?
I have it up and working myself under Vista x64 with the 158. driver as Princess_Frosty suggests.
After it stopped working, my way was, uninstall ATi tool, make sure the driver is removed from the device manager. Restart. I used F8 and disable there for overkill and or for the hell of it. In windows I then did the disable check under CMD then typed exit to quit. I installed ATi Tool again and restarted the computer before I tried to use it.
For now, it's working.

Forget ATI Tools, it's flaky under Vista, use Expert Tool .50, works great.
