Houston, we have a problem.
I KNOW I have the Avira free edition, as I didn't get the popup ad. So I go to update it, I download 2.6mb of updates (mind you I'm on dialup), it switches to the next file, and it's 4.13GB!?!?! It said it would take me 1251 hours to download!

Just uninstall it, dial-up is too slow to download viruses anyway :D

but what file would be 4.13GB for a virus scanner? It would take broadband half the day to download that too.
Let me fetch the name of the file...

In all honesty, I have no idea why that's happening. If I were you, I'd check to make sure you have the latest version (8.1.0.326). Anything older than version 8, download the latest version, uninstall your old version, and install the new one.
If you're running version 8, I have no idea why it would try to download a file that large.

MOST VIRUSES COME THROUGH EMAIL!!
I think I'm safe as I never get any.
I am trying Avira Antivir seems faster then AVG.
At first i had Avast! and i really liked it but the 60 day trial ran out and i had nothing else, so I switched to But defender 3 month trial. After that I got AVG free and I really liked it. It found two viruses/spyware in my D drive but it couldn't get them out so...

Register for free and you get one year, and then you just re-register to get another year.
Been using Avast! for ages.

Avira FTW, AVG8 FTL.
All of personal clients have been getting tons of viruses lately and after I switch them from AVG 8 to Avira, no more problems. Symantec is getting extremely crappy (for some reason, our work clients are still humping Symantec's leg), doesn't pick up as much as it used to.
BTW, MalwareBytes is a great spyware/malware program that actually gets rid of hard to get rid of stuff.

norton did change a lot over the best 3 years, first change was in 2007, then it just started gettting better and better with every year.
plus if you look at the right places you can get norton very cheap with some discounts.
