Sony is reconsidering its pricing strategy for the PlayStation 3 in an effort to ignite sluggish sales in Japan and the crucial US market.

Ryoji Chubachi, Sony's president, said yesterday: "We are re-examining our [PS3] budgeting process in terms of pricing and volume. Sales assumptions change and the market is competitive. We are in the midst of revisiting our strategy for the PS3." Mr Chubachi also said he thought Sony had hit its bullish shipment target of 6m consoles at the end of March.

So...they drop the price on the console that is already costing them a fortune and they make up revenue how? Games for $90?

But it will still have blu-ray so no sale. Instead of dropping the system to $499 they should drop it to $399, take the blu-ray player out and sell for $200 for those that want one and also take out the wi-fi and sell it for $100. Then it would totally be worth it.:o

if it's gonna be true, i'm going to return PS3 to get money back and wait until price drops then rebuy PS3. :) but that'll be too much hassle...

They can't remove the blu-ray drive. Every game released on the PS3 so far is on a Blu-Ray disc. Sony is stuck with the Blu-Ray in the PS3 whether they like it or not. They can't remove the HDD either, since games require it as well for caching.

I can't believe no one said this yet, but what a retarded move on Sony's behalf. Not the actual price cut, but announcing that you're considering a price cut. Who in their right mind is gonna go out and by a PS3 now if there's a price cut coming in the future. That's like the 2nd rule in running a business.

Now, I know this isn't like theyre saying "Price cut in June," but still you should never comment on prices.

Still he brings up a valid point. If I were considering buying a PS3, this news would deter me until a price drop occurred.

Sony needs to grab market share - a price cut is definitely the way at this point

The PS3 is worth more than the x360 b/c it's bd-rom drive allows longer games, uncompressed (and more) music and cinematics.

The x360 sucks b/c games are limited to ~9 GB/disc.

Right now the perception is no games, over priced. Fixing one of those is a positive step, and the games will come with time, Sony has a very good legacy relationship with 3rd party devs.

Fair enough. Then again it might keep people who were put off by the consoles initial high price interested and deter them from buying an alternative console.

Also, remember the processor has a million cores. Or is it a billion? I keep forgetting. Anyway there's lots of them. And that means it's a million billion times better.

The premise behind the idea of dropping the console price is market share. Typically console manufactures sell consoles at a loss and recoup costs from game sales. Without enough market share developers may resist producing titles for the platform, and without titles, people will not buy the console (kind of a chicken and egg situation). So if Sony drops the price they will take a bigger hit upfront, but it "should" provide better revenue down the line sooner.

That is the theory anyway, sometimes it doesn't work quite that way.

Heh, trust me if the PS3 was a bit cheaper, I'd get one. That was just the thought that hit me while reading it.

Dude, totally. And using two or more discs for a game is impossible according to Newton's second law of Physics, so it's Blu-ray or nothing for longer games.

Ninjaman I think you are wrong. I believe you must use a cELL to calculate how many processors are even in a cELL. I have to call 911 before I think about things like that so they can arrive on time to jump start my heart.

And all PS3 gamers are selfish and evil , cos teh c3LL can cure cancer and that's what it should be doing.

This folding at home app on the ps3 really seems to rile people up. Sheesh. But if the 360 had it......

Maybe they said it to stop potential buyers from going out and buying a diffrent console, and hold out for them.

sony is kinda stuck. dropping the price = eating more cost but selling more, keeping the price the same = low sales
