BOB II: Wings of Glory. How long I have waited. It is back out and apparently ready to kick major ass. It has been MEGA PATCHED to version 2.05 and 2.06 is just around the corner with further enhancements. :D

http://www.shockwaveproductions.com/bob/

Not sure how many here played the original BOB (Battle of Britain:Their Finest Hour) in 1990. It was a cult classic among war sim fans. It was a game that took a few hours to realize that it was a full on RTS game hidden beneath a complete and accurate flight sim. Once realized it offered endless hours of living out the last weeks and months of the greatest air war in history over the the channel playing as either the Allies or the Axis to try and write your own version of history. I have ordered my copy!!! :yep:

ALL of these guys can say it WAY better than I do so I am stealing their own words...

SimHQ gives BOBII Best Simulation of 2006 award!!! http://www.simhq.com/_commentary/all_030a.html

QUOTE """Dear flight simulation enthusiast and pilots – welcome to one of the most realistic and entertaining representations of what it must have been like to be a pilot on both sides of the Battle of Britain. Redesigning a game which was ahead of its time in the year 2000 is no easy task. At that time Rowan’s Battle of Britain tried to do the impossible. It pushed even the best machines of its day to the breaking point by rendering massive air battles involving over hundred aircraft at any given point. The visuals were stunning but the game play was disastrous. It was a text book example of a grandiose idea being shredded before our eyes due to its over ambitious requirements. The release of BoB also coincided with the release of three very good combat sims (EOW, WW2 Fighters and Combat Flight Simulator) which further diluted its first impression. Even with a failing game Rowan won the hearts and minds of flight simmers around the world. BoB started a cult that dates back to 1989 and Lucas Arts’ own version of the Battle of Britain, which was also revolutionary for its time. Many hard core fans knew that one day the Battle of Britain would be recreated to a pain staking detail. Unfortunately for Rowan the game’s lack luster sales resulted in it going out of business. On its way out, Rowan was generous enough to the gaming community to release the game’s source core, thus gaining an unimaginable amount of respect among the minority of players who played it regardless of its shortcomings. Several years later, Shockwave, a completely different development team, took on the epic task of reviving the legendary game and redesigning it from the ground up to bring out its true potential.

The Battle of Britain 2 is a perfectly cut diamond. Rowan’s Battle of Britain was beautiful but unpolished. This is the game we were hoping to get six years ago. BoB 2 allows for an unparalleled amount of detail while retaining the fun factor at all times. The best way to describe it would be to merge the IL-2 series of games flight authenticity with Falcon 4.0 Allied Force's complex battlefield dynamics. Only you, the player, can define the depth of the gaming experience in BoB 2. If you wish for an instant gaming fix jump in any one of 28 canned missions that cover everything from taking off and landing to dive bombing and advance dog fighting. When you are ready to get into the serious warfare you should spend some time with a 136 page manual, keycard and map of the area you will be flying in.""" END QUOTE.

PCGAMER MARCH 2007 in the SIM COLUMN of PC GAMER last month - Regarding the recent and latest patch -- “Toss in some improved AI…and a new multiskin component…and you’ll end up with a top-of-the-line WWII combat flight simulation that can hold its own with anything on the 2007 radar screen.”“BOB2’s padlocking system remains one of the best in the business”“If you have the right stuff, a twisting and turning engagement between the nimble Spitfire and the quicker Bf109 can produce some of the most amazing aerial dogfighting action you’ll ever witness in a PC Combat-sim.”

If you are a big flight sim and have never tried it or a fan who wrote it off last year in it's buggier state and gave up, do yourself a favor... Don't let this be the best game you never played! I know I won't. It's back and better than ever.

Also has a very strong and active community of fans and players...

Looks nice. I haven't played any flight sims for quite some time. Been really wanting to- though just regular flying like MS Flight Sim X just isn't appealing. I've been wanting to some decent combat flight sim to play. This game does look appealing. :p

Isnīt BOB2 the follow-up to the IL2 series by Maddox or a totally different sim/dev team? If so, I had no idea that itīs been already out because I just bought IL1946 a few months ago and there were a few early videos of BOB on that DVD.

Here's the long answer...

1990 - Battle of Britain: Their Finest Hour arrive from Lucas Arts. Cult classic and #1 in it's day.

2001 - Rowan's Battle of Britian was an attempted remake but fails. Too Buggy and most hardware could not run it. Rowan goes out of business.

2006 - Shockwave Productions rebuilds it from the ground up and re-releases it as Battle of Brittain II:Wings of Glory and then has some issues at lauch. Those issues are fixed up and they enhanced the game further. This is what this thread is about and is a different game by a different team than Maddox.

IL2, Pacific Fighters and 1946 are all from MAddox which is a different team. Maddox IS however, developing a Battle of Britain themed package of their own. It will no doubt be a hit. But a slight sim same as all the others to the best of my knowledge.

But it probably wont be the same type of game in terms of what BOBII and the previous 2 products before it were. An immersive, living, real time dynamic war where you not only fly all the planes just like any other sim (ala Combat Flight Sim 3 or IL2:FB), but you also get to make the choices every morning looking at the battlemap as the General of your chosen side about which Missions (bombing runs, patrols, raids and such) to do both offensively and defensively. AS the missions all launch you can assume the roll of any aircraft you want.

Your decisions on the warmap strategically effect how the game progresses and eventually your side or theirs wins just like in an RTS. But your decisions can be perfect but doing poorly as the pilot roughly effects the success of the other missions flown that day. It actually matters what happens to you in the sky. :)

Start losing too many pilots or have too many rookies? Guess what's going to happen to the bombers in subsequent bombing runs against your carefullty picked targets. They will get slaughtered as their escorts suck or have limited numbers. See?

Don't protect your factories well for several days with patrols? Less factories = less planes over time so number of pilots don't matter.

BOBII is a flight sim as good as any other but as a game it is far more than a flight sim. It's a time machine you can get lost in for countless hours. And while flight sim is the heart that beats within, it's wrapped in a strategy game.

That said. There is no multiplayer. IL2 is better for that.

Ahhh...

Gonna play the Luftwaffe? See if you can turn the tide? ;)

j/k

I play the Germans simply to fly that amazing Stuka. What a friggan flying TANK that is!

It's crazy! You fly nearly VERTICALLY from thousands of feet up straight down to your target with flaps and dive flaps extended and engine at idle and line up for the kill. You have a rear gunner seat you can possess your co pilot there and fire off some rounds at the spit on your tail and then jump back to pilot and drop that sucka. Then as you race out go back to your gunner position and try to fend off that nasty spit with your tail gun.

There are so many experiences in that game it's hard to describe.

Iīll try all and pick the one that fits best to my flying and flighting skill, but I usually pick the Me262, love the speed and quite simple energy management. ;) Overall I prefer dogfights over bombing runs as well.

Thanks for sharing your experience, sounds very interesting! :)

their finest hour & secret weapons of the luftwaffe

best wwii flight sims ever :)

the campaign mode of swotl is unsurpassed!

I cut my teeth on SWOTL and TFH:BOB. :D

BOB II is in fact "Their Finest Hour" 2006 Edition! I cannot wait for it to get here. Ordered it on Friday. Wish there were still retails carrying it. Now it's only through etailers and their site. But that's ok with me. As long as I can get it. :)

It's a good time to be joining the BOB II family. They just released patch 2.06 today. :D

Can you play this game online?

It would be cool if you had real wingmen and could talk to them through teamspeak.

I used to play BOB all day long. Those BF109E were so sweet. And there is nothing like being one on one with a bomber, opening fire and watch pieces flying as you shred your target. Good times.

Man, I retired my joystick. May have to buy a new one for this.

It's rumored they are working on a multiplayer of some kind or another. It failed in Rowans BOB though. It was crap. So they left it out until they can make sure it will work.

IL2:FB/Pacific Fighters are the only real multiplayer WWII Flight Sim experiences that I know of. It's the champ there.

BOB II is all about the single player, immersion and strategy. The AI is apprently quite spooky to fly against. the sound is unbelieveable. Gotta hear it turned up when no one is home! Shake the damn windows with bursts from your guns and the hum of the engine rumbling your desk. The radio chatter is fantastic and believeable. Your wingmen call for help or notify you of an enemy on your six and so on. You can call forward to airstrips for permission to land and they will vector you.

Now with simulated fear in the latest patch making it fun to try and chase them down when they bug out low to the deck trying to get home all the while you know they are radioing for support and you have limited time to finnish them off before you are swarmed. ;)
