Yeah, so, installed a swiftec MCX462+, turned on comp, starts up, no BIOS beep, nothing on moniter, harddrive spins, but hard drive light on the front of the case does not light up, or blink. Took off heatsink, small hairline green line going through bottom corner in a roundish style (makes shape of corner + the line look like an ice cream cone w/ ice cream on it :-P). Is this a crack, im pretty sure it is i just want another opinion.

Yeah. You cracked it.

The crack let out the magic smoke and broke the chip just like how I broke the news... ;)

even a tiny chip can mess it up, I has a chip smaller than a pinhead, and it messed me up...

Guys always invest in a shim....coz u never know. This goes without saying for AMD cpus, curse AMD with a thousand tadpoles in their pants, for not adopting Intel style Heat Spreaders! I have always used a shim pad for any amd cpu. It costs like $1 or $2. Wise investment because it saves yer expensive AMDcpu!

Hopefully the Athlon64;s will have heatspreader and protect the die more, heck I hope the new bartons (400ddr mhz fsb) will have it too!

Shims are a joke, they can cause more harm than good. I was interested until i saw a review.

Just be carful and you dont need one, apart from that shims also cause your temps to raise about 2-4*c which dont sound like much - but considering how hot athlons run every little bit counts.

url for this review?

proof of temp. difference?

Pelly gave me a free tweakmonster shim ages ago, and it's always helped, but if there's a real temp increase, then maybe it's not for me... I've done all I can to make sure my air setup is nice as possible, by lapping all hsf's, NOT 7 volting the fans which are temp controlled, and securing/holding back all wiring properly for proper airflow... OH! and AS3 applied properly, where it should be...:)

Why would you use a shim with a hole-mounted HSF ?

Whats a crack look like??

Why? Are you thinking of buying some? If so I'd strongly advise against it in favour of good weed.

TheDarkProject <-- Straight Edge XXX, LoL, I ordered a new CPU so hopefully after i CAREFULLY install it with my Swiftech (hole mounted hsf which weighs a ton but cools the best out thier) it will start up, and hopefully i wont get just that messed up "Check moniter connection" message on the screen :p

AHHHHHH NOOOOO WAAAYYYYYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I installed my new CPU today guys, STILL NOTHING! ITS STILL BROKEN *tear*. F*** I guess i toasted to mobo. I looked real close at the "crack" on the old cpu, like with a magnifying glass, i dont think its a crack, it might just be a heat line, man, I am a moron. Anyone wanna let me borrow 100$ for a mobo?! :p
